Nerdette Minute #23: Florence and The Machine Composes Final Fantasy XV

August 31, 2016

Hey Gang!

Just popping in to talk about Music and Video Games today, which is kind of new for me. It's pretty rare that I write about Music on here. I listen to a lot of it, but I haven't posted about it, because I'm just not good at writing about music. So I thought I would talk about it instead.

My Thoughts On: Chaika: The Coffin Princess Season 1 (Spoilers)

August 26, 2016

Hey Gang!

I've watched quite a bit of anime lately, thanks to my awesome subscription to Crunchyroll. Since I'm shelling out money every three months, I figured I would write up my thoughts on each one I complete. Of course, I didn't think about this idea until I'd already watched about 8, but hey, its the thought that count's right?

Today, I'm going to ponder about Chaika: The Coffin Princess. I started this anime Fresh off the tears from Black Bullet, so the opening scene was definitely a welcoming change. I was definitely expecting it to be a bit more serious, but I will take levity whenever I can get it. Chaika is so adorable, although slightly annoying that she speaks in incomplete sentences.

Saboteurs, seem to be more than ninjas but note quite mechanized beings I think it was unique that memories in the form of magic fuel powered all the technology. I loved the growing relationship between Chaika ad Toru. I will ship that all day. You can tell Toru's true feelings, under the magic spell when he's bawling about Chaika not leaving him for Gillette Sama.
I know that Frederica was a Dragoon and pretty much unkillable, but was it really necessary to kill her so many times? If Toru isn't meant to be a saboteur what will he eventually become? I'm so glad there's a second Season for this, hopefully, a few of my unanswered questions will be taken care of then. It was so different seeing a unicorn in such a violent light. They're always adorable magical creatures. Anime these days sure are bloody.
I don't remember them being quite so brutal. Then again, my parents were pretty strict about what I could read and watch. So maybe, I just never encountered any? Why does Chaika carry a coffin? Not every Chaika is a wizard, who trained them all? Who created them all? Is it possible that Gaz had that many daughters? Is Zita a Chaika as well? Also, who the heck is the Ghost? Dude, that little kid Ricardo went down so easily, especially after killing all those girls? He wasn't anything special, just a serial killer. My question is if all those had the ability to be fuel, then why was the village so low on stock? How much fuel was really needed to pilot the flying castle?

In saving Leo, did Gillette Sama perish? I really liked him. Why did Vivi's hair turn white, when she learned the news? I don't think Gillette is dead. I'm hoping he will pop up in season two, like "Hey Guys, did ya miss me?". You'd think that if she needed that coffin that it would at least be light for her, like Thor's Hammer, but instead her just drags it around like everyone else. The ghost lady almost looks regal, like a princess or something. Ain't it just like a sibling to interrupt a kiss we waited all season for. Ricardo and Chaika Layla die together.

This anime was the perfect mix of serious and playful, there were many a time when I laughed out loud. It was weird to me, that I found a good portion of the characters likable, even a couple of the bad guys. This anime was much less sad, which made me way happier. The slapstick comedy was exactly what I needed to recover from Black Bullet. It's a bit bloody, but definitely a semi positive story with a decent segway into the next season. There is something to be said about Layla's last line. I lived and died doing what I wanted. Being free of anyone else's programming and influence. There should be no regrets about a life of freedom. 5 of 5.

Have you guys watched The Coffin Princess? Have more anime to recommend? Lets get hype about it on Twitter!

Nerdette Minute #21:The Worst Interview Ever

August 24, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm off and about doing different things for my real job this week, but I figured I would drop in with some footage I've had for a while now and put together a Story Time for you! A few months ago, I had an interview at a super swanky country Club, for a part time Serving Position. This was around the time I wanted to do more and more vlogging and videos for you guys, so its in general vlog format, albeit kind of smashed together. That seems to be my video style lately though, so I hope you guys are enjoying it.

Have you guys ever had an interview that just went terribly terribly wrong? Leave a comment or lets talk about it on Twitter! Don't forget to Subscribe!! Thanks so Much for Watching!

Adventures With Spokhette #2: CGG Brunch + Bachelorette Party

August 22, 2016

Hey Gang!

I've got a two fer for you today. So at the beginning of August, I attended my very first Cincinnati Geek Girl Brunch Event. Myself and five other girls went to brunch at the Sleepy Little Bee Cafe. It was my first time going and it was one of those "healthy" places. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to eat anything because, a lot of those places love their peanuts. I wound up getting the roasted potatoes and the sausage patties. WHICH WERE DELICIOUS!
There was a DC Quiz, I got 6 out of 10, but I was pretty impressed with a few of the questions, they weren't your run of the mill. The ladies put some serious thought into these. I got some Batman Patches and keychains for acing the quiz. We had some deep discussions from Doctor WHO to Which Dick Grayson is best to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I had so much fun, I can't wait until October's Meeting.  From there we headed to Kenwood Theatre, where we watched Suicide Squad. I will have a review for you sometime soon, but let me just tell you I absolutely loved it! I don't understand how Snyder can put out such a decent movie like Suicide Squad, but fell so flat with Batman V. Superman and Man of Steel. I fell in love with Katana and Deadshot, and was really annoyed how much I liked Harley and Joker, although they definitely downplayed how abusive he was in the movie. I also caught a gastly in the theater, which I thought was pretty neat.

About two and a half hours later, I got changed and headed out to my friend Bridget's Bachelorette Party. This is the first time that I had ever been a part of a bridal party and at first, I was a little concerned, that I wasn't really cut out for it. I didn't know what I was doing and I only knew a couple of the other girls chosen. Despite, constantly trying to network and meet new people, in person, I'm kind of shy, and I worry about making a bad first impression.
However, at the Bachelorette Party, I have to say was the first time, I was comfortable with the rest of the girls, and it was the first time I felt comfortable being myself! We played an awesome guess the Panties Game. Each party attender, buys the bride to be a pair of underwear that describes themselves, and then the BTB has to figure out whose undies are whose! It was a blast! Then there were lots of Phallic related food and drinks, and then we got all bundled up in cars, and drove to Indiana for Boogie Nights and we danced the night away. I hadn't danced like that in such a long time, and it felt so good!!! From the time we arrived on the dance floor Saturday to the time I walked into my house on Sunday Morning, I had walked a combined 20,687 steps, a lot of that was acrued on the dance floor though. I felt so athletic though, like instead of going to the gym every day, I should just go dancing every other night!

Did you guys do anything fun this week? Lets chat about it on Twitter!!

Cinema #24: Star Trek Beyond (Slight Spoilers)

August 19, 2016

Hey Gang!

In case you didn't know I am a huge fan of Star Trek TOS. I came across it at a time when my life was in a scar place and it really inspired me to do something about it. Inspired me so much that for a while I had a blog dedicated to it, Vulcan Sugar and Spice, back in 2011. I've always liked the original series more than
any of the other ones, Alex's favorite is Next Generation. The original series was ahead of its time in a number of ways, and its something that drew me to the series, and even though it was before my time, there are many things that resonate with me.
I was a fan of both movies that came before by J.J. Abrahms, but was pretty excited about Beyond, because Justin Lin was producing/directing, and he did such an amazing job with the Fast and the Furious series. A franchise that is pretty high up on my favorites list. So I knew I was going to go see this movie, even thought there were a few people talking about bad
reviews. I try hard not to listen to reviews, because I like to make my own decisions. Its very rare, that I don't see a movie because of the reviews that are out, and sometimes they even push me to go see the movie anyway, for instance, the Japanese Live Action Lupin Film that came out a couple of years ago, you can read my thoughts here. Enough Rambling, lets get down to the movie!
Was it just me or were the Tanexxi kind of similar to vicious tribbles? I really need Bones to take some sensitivity training. Even though I thought the scenes with Bones and Spock working together were my favorites out of the whole movie. The comedy was top notch in this one, I chuckled pretty much the whole movie. The idea of the Yorktown base, floating in space, where people from all over can visit and socialize before heading off on another 5 year journey, or what have you, I thought was pretty neat. Instead of floating through space alone, and with your crew surrounded by things you don't know, you can always just pop off to the west a couple of light years, and connect with civilization again.
It's really starting to annoy me, that peoples idea of inclusion, is to cast black people, or people of color, as creatures, (especially in sci-fi) where they are so absolutely and utterly deformed that they couldn't be recognized not only of color, but as a human being. Its very indicative of dehumanizing people of color, to make it easier to oppress. Its okay to treat them this way, they aren't human. I feel like it takes us way too many steps back. Not only in Beyond, but Star Wars with Lupita, and Suicide Squad with Killer Croc.
I thought that the technology in this one was pretty top notch. I mean, that translation device inside the suit? So they can understand what the refugee was saying? That was pretty amazing. I definitely felt like she was up to no good, and it kept me on edge the entire time that once she was on board the ship, she hardly appeared, or said more than two words. I was super suspicious of her from the get go.
Krall's ability to "eat" the victims reminded me of Vampires. He's legit a space vampire, staying alive all those years, by eating the "essence" of his victims c'mon! How cool is that? Love that LT. Uhura's ability to hear his voice in the background of an old video allowed them to identify Krall before he went vampire. I loved that her ability was utilized in a capacity away from the com on the bridge.
Although, I was a huge fan of the hip hop used in the movie.... the fact that they needed something with lots of noise, kind of annoyed me. One of the biggest things about people that don't like Rap and Hip Hop, they think its just noise. When in actuality, it is a unique way to express oneself, in a way that wasn't there before. A way that honestly, and is uniquely black.
"When you've lived as many lives as he, fear of death is Illogical." Spock.
"You gave your girlfriend a tracker. That was not my intention." The comedy was gold in this. Absolute gold. Another thing, I really liked about the movie was the homage to Anton, and Leonard Nimoy. The way they honored the original crew, was amazing and beautiful, and honestly it made me cry. Not bawling my eyes out like Big Hero 6 Crying, but I did shed a few tears.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I felt that they did a decent job honoring the crew that came before them, and did a great job leading the movies into a new generation. I highly recommend anyone interested in sci-fi or star trek to go see it as soon as you can, and wear something fitting to honor the 50th anniversary. 4/5 stars.

Have you seen Star Trek Beyond? Lets talk about it on Twitter! I'm always up for chatting about film!

My Go To Tips for Beginning Convention Goers.

August 15, 2016

Hey Gang!

As I watch the calendar jealously, Convention season is about to start up again. Specifically San Diego Comic Con. No lie, it is my dream to go there. It's number 4 on my bucket list. *Side Note, I may be able to break another number on my bucket list, meeting Stan Lee because he's coming to Cincinnati Comic Expo.*
A great place to find conventions in your area is Eventbrite, the largest self-service ticket website, with their awesome conferences page, you can find conventions in your area, and even help get your own convention open and available for ticket purchases.
My first convention was Ohayocon, in Columbus Ohio, I was a college freshman, and I went with my college's Anime Club, *sniff Good Times*, I had absolutely NO IDEA what I was doing man did it show. I did a decent job of blogging about it, but not being prepared to explore it! I actually wrote about this four years ago, but here is a more updated version.  I want to share some do's and don't's with you guys, so you don't make the same mistakes I did.

- Get a Map. You can generally find a program towards the entrance. Grab one. There is nothing worse than getting lost, especially in bigger conventions. There's a lot of unnecessary walking that you can avoid by simply reading the program guide.

- Schedule. See if you can find programming on their website so you can plan accordingly. You don't have to follow your schedule to a T, but you do want to have some idea of what you want to see, who you want to see and how long it will take. Then you can cut activities according to how much time you have. It is also good to make a list of everyone you want to see, so you don't miss anyone!

- Weather-Proof Packing: Pack accordingly, especially if your convention takes place in areas with unpredictable weather, like *ahem* Ohio.  I always pack one outfit for every day that I'm away. Plus some type of pajamas and one tank top and one pull over. I always wear the tanktop and I tie the pullover around my waist so if it gets cold I can put it on, or if it gets hot, I can strip down to the tank top, with minimal effort. ALSO FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!!!! If you are cosplaying, look into gel inserts, for the shoes you are wearing. I wore Zatanna to a relatively small convention and walked to the car barefoot, because I couldn't handle my stilettos. Inserts are a gals best pal.

- Snacks: I like to go to the grocery store nearby the night before the convention. I grab a couple of sodas, and easy to carry easy to eat one handed snacks. There is nothing worse than getting sick or fainting during your convention so make sure that you remember to feed yourself. Packing your own snacks, allows you to eat on the go and save all that hard earned money for the good stuff, a decent trip down Artist Alley.

- Checklist: I create a checklist every night before I go to bed, so I know everything that I need for the next day. This includes things like put all electronics on charge, pack both cameras. List of comics I need to have so I can get them signed. What snacks and drinks I want to bring, so in the morning, I can toss everything in my bag and be ready to go.

- MOST IMPORTANT! Cosplay is NOT consent. DON'T BE A CREEP. Ask a cosplayer before taking a photo. If they tell you no, then let that be the end of it. They are human beings just like you and me, would you like it if someone followed you around the entire convention? Or if they touched you without permission? Exactly. The same principles apply here. If you'd like more information, this is great guide.

Just remember to be fun and to be safe, after all that's the point right? Do you have any go to tips when it comes to convention going? Make sure to visit Eventbrite for conventions in your area. Let me know if you're visiting any in the Ohio/ Kentucky area! Lets talk about it on Twitter!!

Adventures With Spokhette #1: Covington Coffee

August 12, 2016

Hey Gang!

I've been trying to get out and explore my city more. Since I work at night, and work on the blog during the day or when I get off work, its super easy to spend the rest of my free hours sleeping. I'm trying to get better about getting out, and working on my blog in fresh places. They say that it juices up the old spark plugs, and can inspire new ideas.
Pretty close to my house, a new coffee shop opened up and I thought I would check it out. The staff is super friendly, and although I couldn't eat anything because there were nuts, I enjoyed my stay. I'm not a coffee or tea fan, so I opted for the carbonated lemonade. I was probably there for an hour but I saw all kinds. Businessmen, and Wedding Photographers and the conversation was never stilted. It was a very calming experience, and I thoroughly enjoyed working on the New Game Review post while I was there.

Have you been exploring your cities? Have you come across any awesome places lately? Let's chat about our adventures on Twitter!!

Nerdette Minute #19: Makeup Unboxing

August 10, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to be back on youtube. I missed making videos so much. I'm so glad that I'm finally over my lack of creativity and motivation. I'm glad I took a break, instead of forcing myself to create content. I feel like if it's forced, its not as good as if its natural. With Video, it's super obvious if you aren't interested in what you are talking about, where when you type, you may be able to come off a bit more geniune, all depending on your tone.
I definitely didn't want to give you guys any half-assed content, so I took a small break, and I'm so sorry about it. Its obvious that people were upset because I lost a few followers, and ya know I am very sorry to see them go. However, I'm very happy that there are followers that decided to stay and stick with me, and THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!

I thought about swatching they eyeshadows, but then I decided not. I've always wanted black lipstick, and I finally wore Perry Panther to my friend's Bachelorette Party, and I really loved the way it looked, I even got a few compliments!! I added the bat wing earcuff, but after that, the lipstick, eyeliner and black dress, I decided that I was looking a little too Goth. So I decided to add my Alice in Wonderland Headband from Hot Topic, to add a little color.

If you liked seeing makeup again on my channel and blog, make sure to thumbs up and subscribe so I know this is what the gang wants to see! See You again Next Wednesday for another Video!!

July Favorites ' 16

August 8, 2016

Hey Gang!

I can't believe it's already August! 2016 has just been zooming by! The summer is almost over, and the school year is starting again. Which is a little stressful for me, not because I will be attending classes, but because my Big Girl Job is going to start again, and that makes me a little nervous. Its supposed to be all electronic instead of paper based this time, which makes me even more nervous, because things that need battery power, generally die around me all the time.
I just need time to slow down. Like I haven't been able to catch up! Now I'm 25, and it's already a new month, and I'm just like AAAAAAH, there are so many things that I want to do and I feel like time just isn't waiting for me, and now I'm running to catch up. I did manage to get some cool things done in July, and I can't wait to tell you guys about them!!

- When I was younger, one of my favorite book series, was Bunnicula, the vampire Rabbit, by James Howe, at the start of my relationship with Alex, we came across a paperback version in Barnes and Noble and it's fate was sealed. I bought it and we read it out loud together, and he loved it! So when we in Half Price Books around the end of July, I came across the entire rest of the set, except for one, so of course I had to get it! They said they could order the missing one online and have it sent to me, so pretty soon the set will be complete. It will probably be the 3rd complete series of books I've owned in my lifetime. I'm kind of excited about that. I read a lot, but their in my kindle or rented from the library, so I'm not really building a library, which is one of the few things that I've always wanted to do.

- Towards the end of July the #BlackWomenDidThat was trending on Twitter, and Jamie of Black Girl Nerds, recirculated an original post I wrote for them when I was just starting out. 20 Black Superheroine's You've Never Heard Of. It felt super good but also weird to see old content not only make the rounds again, but be relevant as well. I guess that's what is considered quality content huh.

- Level 5 released a trailer for the next Layton game, featuring his daughter. I instantly fell in love with her smile, wits and adorable outfit, like she has moved straight to the top of my cosplay list. I'm currently compiling all the reasons I'm excited into a video for you guys, but for right now I definitely wanted to including falling in love with Lady Layton in my July favorites. Like how could I not? Her mini Top Hat ya'll!!!

- Getting to celebrate My Birthday. My Sister's 18th Birthday. My Mother's Birthday. It was a blast. We played board games. Explored the city looking for Pokemon. Visited an art exhibit that really really pissed us off. Got delicious baked goods, appetizers and homemade Ribs, what more could you ask for?

- Seeing Star Trek Beyond, AND buying a USA TODAY SPECIAL for the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. I'm always unsure when new members of the gang started following me. Maybe you were here the last time I talked about my love of the original series, maybe you weren't. Maybe you are tired of hearing about my love for Commander Spock, maybe you don't even know. SO, I'll tell ya anyway. Before I was Nerdette At Large, I was Vulcan Sugar and Spice, and I wrote fashion posts and makeup, with hints of Star Trek here and there. I discovered it at a time in my life when I was having issues being myself around people.

- This month I discovered and finished Season One of Penny Dreadful. I know I'm late. Since I started watching some semi-gory anime, I figured I could handle Penny Dreadful now. Even still, I'm a bit squeamish. There are certain parts on certain episodes I still turn away or close my eyes. I know I just turned 25, but I guess that doesn't automatically come with adult vision that's primed with unsqueamishness. <--- I know that's not a real word, just humor me. I am really enjoying it though, and I'm thinking about writing up a little something, a little later one. I kind of want to give you guys a break from the anime/television review/opinion posts, I've kind of been rolling them out.

- I am so excited that yet another Fangirling Post was well-received at Her Story Arc. I was so honored, when I was approached to write for them, and the fact that I have my own semi-regular series on another site, with a significant reach makes me feel like I'm finally getting somewhere as a blogger. I specifically say blogger, instead of writer, because although, the posts I created from them are text based, I do not want to be considered a freelance writer. I don't have the training or the heart that freelance writers do, like my cousin Brianna or Ed, and I feel like that would kind of be an insult to them. Also! Don't think I'm putting myself down, because I'm not. I learned a long time ago, that I didn't want to be a writer. I wanted to create "something" that "someone" could enjoy. Which is definitely what I'm doing as a content creator, so yeah, I may not be getting paid a living wage for it right now, but I thoroughly enjoy being a multi-media content creator, and when you love what you are doing how can you go wrong?

Did you guys do anything fun in July? I love being able to share my adventures with you guys, and Vis a Vis, so lets chat about it on Twitter! Also, YAY, to the crazy jump in Followers, I'm almost to 490 followers!!! Thanks so much for hanging out with me gang, it is such a blast!!!

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~

Spokhette Explores: Birthday Weekend

August 5, 2016

Hey Gang!

It's been a while since I just sat down and talked to you about my day. I miss it, I miss the actual act of blogging. The act of writing about my day and adventures where people can read it. Writing about my adventures in the public eye. I do it a lot on Youtube, but its been a while since I just let you guys in, in a written post. So Snuggle in, and buckle up, I've got a lot to get through today.
The cool thing about July, it's a super busy month. It involves not only my birthday, but my sisters and my moms. Which means the last two weekends get kind of crazy. We were pretty laid back this year though. For my birthday, Alex got me an Instax Mini 8, along with 40 regular film and 10 colored film sheets. I'm so in love with it, I take it with me everywhere, and one thing I really like about it, is I can put my Website on it, and make instant business cards!! We spent the day playing board games and spending time with family, it was great.
For my Sister's Birthday, we spent the day exploring the city searching for Pokemon. She had a blast, so that's all that mattered. It did kind of suck that her day was the hottest out of all three, but hey I lost a few pounds and got a tan. I got to explore the Sanitation department, which includes two gyms and more pokemon than you can shake a stick at. I caught a bunch, but the ones that stand out the most are the Charmeleon, Jigglypuff and a Pinsir. Alex caught a Pidgey on my shoulder and since then I've been Gabby the Pirate with my Pidgey companion, Mad Claw taking over the seas.
For my Mother's Birthday, We attempted to be classy and went to Eden Park for the Cincinnati Art Museum, to check out the 30 American's exhibit, which was supposed to be about Black Excellence and a culture experience. Instead we were greeted by Black Face, Ku Klux Klan Gates, and a room with a noose in the middle and surrounded by empty Klan Hoods. I was NOT IMPRESSED. We left after that, the only saving grace with the Painting Sleep, that we was by the entrance.
After that, we stopped by Buskens for sweets, of which I bought WAY TOO MANY. It had been a while since I had had baked goods, because I devoured those two donuts in no time. Then we had appetizers at Outback which pretty much turned into a meal. Between myself and Alex, Mom and Gianna, we put away two orders of mild wings, regular Aussie Cheese fry AND an order of Crab stuffed Mushrooms. It was so fun to be able to pamper my mom for a change, because she's always taking care of us, it felt really good and adult like to be able to treat her.

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~

My Thoughts On: New Game 1-4 (Slight Spoilers)

August 1, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm really churning these guys out huh. I've been on anime binge lately. Luckily, I have found a still airing anime!! Which is super rare, for me. I generally prefer to have a full season to binge watch rather than waiting for the new episode next week, I am not the most patient woman. At first glance, New Game appears to be an adorable series about a gamer who has the rare opportunity to work at the company who created her favorite game. However, I think it is going to become much more than that, I can see friendship being a staple in this series.
Aoba San has just graduated high school and is starting her first day at Eagle Jump, a gaming company responsible for her favorite video game. Let me just tell you from jump, that I am in love with this series. The characters are adorable the story is off to a great start and it is literally what I want out of life.
An all female gaming company, with unique women creating RPG games that I wish I could play, and there's an OFFICE CAT?! What more could you want? Could this be my dream job? Never have I wanted to be a fictional character so badly as I did after watching the first episode of this series. My favorite character is Hifumi-Sempai right now. HECK, there's even a dark skinned character: Umiko Sempai. What is life right now?
If you'd like to catch up, it is airing on Crunchyroll right now, the first 4 episodes are available, and the new episode comes out today at 11:30 in Japan! Have you gotten a chance to witness the adorable gamer nerds in this anime?

Lets chat on Twitter!! I love talking to you guys about anime, comic books, video games and more, don't be shy, come say hi!!!

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~
