Comics Roundup #8

July 31, 2015

Hey Gang!
How are you guys doing today? If you guys are following me on Youtube, you will have already seen all the comics that I'm talking about today. One of the perks, of subscribing to my channel, you get to see the awesome stuff first. For everyone else, I'm going to talk about my latest trip to my (now local) Comic shop. This was actually my first time visiting, but I loved it so much that I'm not going to go anywhere else now!
I originally stopped by Arcadian Comics and Games so that I could shyly offer a stack of my business cards to put on their counter, but then I looked inside and it was glorious. Not only did I get to leave a stack of my business cards, and some of my stickers, I also got to schedule an interview with the staff (coming soon) and a poster of NO Mercy signed by Alex De Campi! (Giveaway coming soon!)
I have read all of the comics I purchased and pretty much loved them all. Black Canary is actually starting to grow on me. But I am newly in love with Silk, A-Force and Spider-Woman. I knew that once I saw Silk, I was going to love her, which is why I was so upset that I couldn't find it. I know I'm going to get serious hate mail for this, but I like her SOO much better than Spider-Gwen, in fact, had I known about Silk before Spider-Gwen, I probably wouldn't have picked it up at all.

What have you guys been reading? Any suggestions for me? Spill on Twitter: #Nerdetteatlarge!~

Don't forget to subscribe to the social media links below, that way you won't miss a beat!

P.S. It is my mother's Birthday today, Thanks in advance for the wishes!

Sew Nerdy: 1st Finished Project

July 29, 2015

Hey Gang!

Back to our regular scheduled programming. My vacation was really nice guys, and I can't wait to show you a comprehensive blog/vlog post about it all, but first, I've been sewing. I'm not proclaiming anything other than, I plugged in my sewing machine and it started working, properly, for the first time since I've bought it. While, I was hanging out with Alex's family, I discovered a new video from Pink Chocolate Break, who showed us how to use a dress you already owned, as a pattern to make your own. If you guys aren't already following her on youtube, go check it out because she is dropping some serious knowledge.
Now although, her videos are awesome, she is a lot smaller than me, and I had to get a lot more material to attempt it. But oh my goodness, you guys! It was so clean and clear cut, and I didn't give up and cry out in frustration! I actually finished a dress. I sewed a piece of clothing that I can actually wear outside and I feel good about it! I got some stretchy orange plaid fabric from one of my many trips to Jo-Ann Fabrics, and got to work, it took me about two and a half hours to finish the dress. Reasons it took so long. 1.) Super new at this (had to read the manual) 2.) Had trouble shooing off cats, so I could cut out the fabric pieces on the floor. 3.) It was 3 a.m. when I was hit with the determination to actually complete the project.

Have you guys caught the sewing bug? What kind of projects are ya working on? Spill on twitter!

 Stay Nerdy,

Arcade Heaven and a Haul

July 27, 2015

Hey Gang!

I stopped by Arcade Legacy recently to hang out with my cousins, and they had a few new additions. The cabinet with Magical Drop 3 was broken, I almost bawled, but the owner put it on a new cabinet for me to play, so I could get my fix. I also played a copious amount of Snk Vs. Capcom 2 one of my favorite arcade games, I was a little rusty, but it didn't take long to get into the groove. I also got a few rounds of Crazy Taxi and Rock Band in. Unfortunately, I was stuck with guitar or bass, because they didn't have a microphone hooked up, maybe they'll have one next time.
I noticed that they added Captain America and the Avengers (Super old school) SO of course, I had to get some photos of that, My cousins and I played Table Tennis for a dismal half n Hour, I think it's finally been decided that its just not our game. I also watched my cousin play Star Wars, and spent a couple of rounds with High School Justice. I hadn't played that since my Dreamcast (wistful sighing) They have retro games and newer games for sale, so I spent a good time looking over those. There is a Ps Vita there that's just calling my name. I'll be back for that pretty, I already let the staff over there know!
I wound up grabbing Sailor Moon S Puzzle Challenge cartridge for the Super Famicom. I know I won't be able to play it without an emulator, but its still pretty cool to add to my nerd collection right? I also picked up Pokemon Pearl, because my Diamond cartridge isn't working properly, and Pokemon White. I ordered mine online through Ebay, and not only has it stopped working, but it wasn't a legit copy, so of course, I had to get that fixed!

Have you been to any arcades lately? What have you been playing? Tell on twitter: #nerdetteatlarge

Comics Roundup #7

July 24, 2015

Hey Gang!

Two weeks ago, I stopped by Queen City Comics, since I was visiting my parents and picked up some comics on Wednesday. I have finished Reading Gotham Academy, Batgirl, and Black Canary, so far. The tradebacks of Saga and the Wicked and the Divine, are much thicker than anticipated, so It is taking a minute for me to get through them. I am unsure if I am the only person like this, but I will get a book if it pretty. Like great art, or if it looks pretty, regardless of what might actually be inside. I am uncertain if I will like the Story of the Wicked and the Divine, or Saga but both Tradebacks are beautiful. They just look so nice on my book shelf.
Even though, I am not a fan of Damian Wayne, I was sad to see him come and go so quickly in Gotham Academy! I was rooting for him and Maps, I thought they were a super cute couple. I was so torn between picking up the variant or the regular cover for issue 8, because they were both really nice, but in the end, I went with the Teen Titans Go Variant, because, DUDE! Just look at it!
I wasn't impressed with the blocky art that is Black Canary #1, But since she is a favorite character, I think I will wait until issue 5 to make final judgement on whether it will be something that I will continue to collect. The art and concept for Spider-Gwen was great until I picked it up as well. I only read Issues 1 and 2 and was not impressed. All three are for sale in my shop at the moment. While I was there I was looking for A-Force #1 and Silk #1, because they were both missing and definitely ones that I wanted to start reading, but alas, I was unable to locate them there! I was disappointed with the lack of story in Batgirl Endgame, and I don't know if I just don't like the whole thing, or if it would be better with words in it....I'm honestly, still unsure at this point...

What are you guys reading? Any recommendations for me? Tell me on Twitter: #nerdetteatlarge

I also want to mention that it is my younger sister's birthday. She says thanks in advance.

Nerdette Daily: Cosplay Edition

July 20, 2015

Hey Gang!

Last week was so crazy for me! So much Comic and Gaming News, especially with SDCC! I learned that Batman '66 is going to do a crossover with the Avengers, not Marvel but Mrs. Peel. The british television show from the 60's was one of my go to tv shows to watch and it makes me so happy that two of my favorite "oldies" are coming together in a new way, I can't wait to pick up a copy of that issue. I'm so sorry about Nintendo's President Iwata's Passing. The first president that was not related to the founding company's family Yamauchi. At only 55, he left the world too young, and leaving behind a legacy that will be cherish for quite a time longer. Hayao Miyazaki is making his first CG movie and it's about a tiny caterpillar.
As one of my favorite story tellers, with parts of my heart held by Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbor Totoro, I feel like I can have complete faith in his ability with a new medium. Plus, it's a caterpillar, so it's going to be awesome. I've already left on vacation but do not fret! I have lots of content lined up for you! Wednesday is my birthday, and Friday, I've got a Comics' Roundup! The first in a while, Since I realized that there is a comic book shop up the street from me, they will be appearing much more frequently! I've decided that I am going to attend both  Cincy Comic Expo and Cincy Comic Con, since they are in my home town. I want to have a cosplay to wear to them. I'm decided on two, but for right now I know that I want to be Launch from Dragon Ball. It makes me so sad that Toriyama, basically forgot about her, I would have loved to have had more of her in the show!

 Stay Nerdy,

OOTD: Twice the Marvel

July 17, 2015

Hey Gang!
Lately, I've been on a "getting Healthy" kick. I put it in quotations, because although I have been (trying) to watch my portion sizing and exercising (biking + hooping) I haven't really changed my eating habits. I'm just very very stuck in my ways, and I really like food, but at least I've been trying! Alex and I took our bikes up to Pioneer Park and went around their track twice. It's just a really nice way to exercise/relax because it's time I get to share with him without anyone else around and I really cherish it. I'm wearing another Marvel tanktop that I picked up with the rest of my new shirts. This one has lace inserts near the arms. I paired it with pink "cheer" shorts from No Boundaries, that I got for a steal from Walmart. I paired them with pink shoes that are so old I can't actually remember when or where I bought them. They are super comfortable and perfect to go biking in.
Out and about Alex and I caught the last couple of minutes of the fireworks of the all-star game, and we followed them all the way to the river's Edge. They were so pretty and I couldn't help but take a few photos! It felt so good to get my camera back from the shop! It was gone for so long and I was so anxious the whole time it was away from me! I'm always telling Alex that we need to get out more and that we should be humans and not crabs. I was glad we got the opportunity to get out and get some great shots!

 Stay Nerdy,

Changes!

July 15, 2015

Hey Gang!

So a week has come and gone, and I'm sure you've noticed some cosmetic and content changes here at Nerdette At Large. Do not fear! I am still the same person and thus, am still capable of creating the content that you love and enjoy, but I wanted to make sure that I was staying true to myself as well. If you go through the really old archives, 2011 and back, you'll see this was more of a style and makeup blog. I won't be going that far, but there will be style posts and tutorials popping up here and there. I wanted to bring it to your attention, so you guys didn't freak out!
The banner with my new branding and logo, was created by Kristen Winklebee. I found her on Instagram and her art is glorious, if you haven't seen her stuff, you must go now...right after you finish reading my post of course! In the Navigational Bar, you'll notice a new tab, called Nerdette Minute. This is the title of my brand new youtube channel coming soon. I'm not sure what kind of content I want to do yet, but I know it will be fun and to the point. So click it, to subscribe so you don't miss anything!
Posting schedule will resume Next week, because I will be on vacation in Virginia Beach, and don't want to leave you guys without content for an entire week, you might forget about me! If you are interested in the hijinks I'll be up to on my vacation, simply follow me on twitter and instagram. Or you can wait for the blog round up.

Thanks for reading guys!

 Stay Nerdy,

OOTD: Marveling at the Fireworks!

July 8, 2015

Hi Gang!
How are you today? I didn't post Monday for two reasons. 1. I had to do a double so there was no time. 2. I've been working on some new stuff for the blog and I wanna keep it a secret just a little while longer. This past weekend was the 4th of July and I spent half with my family and half with Alex's it was a pretty fun time.
Work was slow on Friday, So I was able to enjoy a full 3 day weekend! On Friday, I bought 4 new nerd chic shirts, and I'll be showing them off in outfit of the day posts for the next week or so. I've always been a fan of having clothes for my fandoms, because it's so much easier to strike up conversation that way, especially if you run into someone that knows your fandom, rather than someone who just likes your shirt.
I tried to introduce Hong Kong Phooey to my younger cousins, but they were just too young to understand its comedic genius. We played copious amounts of Heads up, they have a superhero category but it's lacking something fierce, so everyone contributed and now we have a "master" deck so to speak. On Saturday, I headed over to Alex's Parents and we swam and watched a lot of fireworks, their deck was the perfect vantage point and with all the swivel chairs, I didn't miss a single spark. Alex had his fun when his mom brought up a box of fireworks from the basement, sometimes he had me a little worried because he was lighting them in a (semi) empty corona bottle.
It was super hot and muggy, so I wore an altered Marvel Tanktop, and a pleated jean skirt, it is one of my favorites, it even has two "real" pockets!!! I fell in love with this top instantly, 1 because it was Marvel and 2 because it had a lot of characters that aren't well known, and I absolutely love when you find a comic shirt with that one random character that is totally a staple in the comic but people don't really know who they are. Like a couple months ago when I picked up a t-shirt that was too small for me because it had SHE-HULK + SPIDERWOMAN on it, how could I pass it up?! Luckily, they released a tank top in my size later, and I bought that as well.

How was your July the 4th? Any Nerd Shirts in your wardrobe? Tell me about it! #nerdetteatlarge

June Favorites

July 3, 2015

Hi Gang!
Oh my gosh, you guys! July crept up like a sneaky sunovagun! I just can't believe it will be my birthday in less than 20 days! June was a really long month for me, and I have a lot of things on my list, so lets just jump right in!

- Hey Claire: If you've been following me on twitter then you'll know I've been talking about her videos a LOT! I just really enjoy them, she has a calming voice. I literally just hop onto a playlist of her videos and then continue with what I have to do for the rest of the day! I think I have seen almost all of her videos, but I SWEAR, I am not a stalker, I just know what I like.

- Can we talk about the Awesome Ladies N.A.L. has had this month? Xo Mia + Usagi in Wonderland,  if you missed them, you can find their articles!

- I got a CAR! I am so so so in love with it, you guys! I can't wait to take it everywhere!

- Finished Season 1 of Say I Love You! I hate that they only made thirteen episodes.... I don't know how long I will have to wait until the new episodes come out.

- Discovering that my downtown library has a PARKING LOT! You guys don't understand how much stress + anxiety I get from going anywhere downtown. I'm always worried that I won't have anywhere to park, or that I will get towed, or stolen, or ticketed or something worse, it was so AMAZING to find out that I could park in a secure lot for FREE!

- Reviving my youtube! If you haven't seen my "back to life" episode, you can watch it here. It's been quite some time since I updated, I'm reaching for a video every week.

- Catching up on Adventure Time, thanks to HuluPlus, Alex and I are on Season 4 now, we're trying to get completely caught up with the episodes that are airing on television right now. Can I just say, ALL THE FEELS? I really want Finn to find someone who will care for and treat him right.

- Sizing up my gauges. I was a size two, and now I am wearing double zero's comfortably, I think I will continue and plateau at size zero, since I am unsure where I want to go from there.

- Killinmesoftlydolls on Instagram! Their dolls are So INCREDIBLY ADORABLE! I am soo Soo SOO in love with their Jason Doll. (Yes, I like horror movies and I want a plushy serial killer, so sew me... See what I did there?)

- and finally but Way More important than anything else: THE LEGALIZATION OF SAME SEX MARRIAGE IN ALL 50 STATES!!!!! Which also bring me to my next point. Nerdette At Large, is a SAFE PLACE FOR ALL! No matter, your Gender/Sexuality/Orientation. I want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in my little space in the net, so we can all nerd out together!

What are some of your favorite things for June? Tell me all about it on Twitter, don't forget the #nerdetteatlarge, so It's easy for me to find!

Gamer Famelle: Ari of Comics and Cookies!

July 1, 2015

Hi Gang!
I know, that it looks like I've been slacking, but I've been doing stuff I swear! Here's proof, I got to interview Ari of Comics and Cookies over the weekend!! Make sure you read the interview and follow her on twitter and give her lots of love!!!

Playstation Or Xbox and Why?
I used to be Playstation, but moved over to Xbox. Not for any particular loyalty, it just happened to be the consoles my Dad got! We started off with a PS1, then a PS2, then Xbox and then Xbox360. Now, I share an Xbox One with my boyfriend. In an ideal world, I'd own both!

Sony or Nintendo for your mobile gaming?
Nintendo! I used to love my DS and I'm looking into getting a 3DS as well. I love all the cutesy 3DS games you can get, but I'd also love to get some of the horror games, I bet with the 3D, they'd be really effective.

What do you like to see in your games? What about them makes them your favorites?
It has to be either good gameplay, good aesthetic, or good story. If a game is fun and non-complicated to play then I'll play it alot, and the same goes for story. Some of the best games I've played over the years have been games that I have not been able to tear myself away from because I've been so invested in the story and wanted to find out what happened next- the main example that comes to mind is Final Fantasy X and Fallout. As for good aesthetic, it's not necessarily the graphics-just the look of the game. I currently have Child of Light in my Xbox library that I haven't played yet, and one of the things that attracted me was the look of it.

If you could be any villain, who would you choose and why?
Lich King from World of Warcraft, so I could finally get my hands on Invincible.

If you could be any hero, who would you choose and why?
It'd have to be someone from a big, open-world explorer- probably the lone Wanderer or the Courier from Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Exploring the irradiated wasteland looks like it'd be a lot of fun.

Top 5 Favorite Games.
Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy X, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Fallout 3 and Tetris. I am shamelessy addicted to Tetris.

If you had to live in a game's environment, which would you choose?
Animal Crossing! Everything is so cute and you get to own your own house and live with cute animals, it'd be a dream come true!

Are you a fan of Pokemon? What are a couple of your favorites?
Yes! I loved Pokemon when I was a kid, and sunk a lot of time into Pokemon Blue Version. I love Eevee and the Eeveelutions, as well as Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite.

Do you have any game-related memorabilia that you cherish?
I used to have an absolutely huge Fallout New Vegas poster that my Dad liberated from our local game shop before it shut down. No kidding, this poster was freaking huge- it was easily 2.5 M high and about 3 across. I also have various bits of jewelry and tees that I cherish, and especially the Kingdom Hearts necklace that my boyfriend bought me for Christmas last year! I wear it every day without fail.

If someone was new to gaming, and you wanted to get them hooked, which game would you suggest they play?
It would depend hugely on what type of game they wanted. If it was something casual, I'd suggest mobil games, like Tsum Tsum, Angry Birds or Tetris. If they wanted a solid time sink, I'd recomment Final Fantasy, Mass Effect or Fallout. If they wanted a social experience, I'd recommend something like WOW- but take the time to learn the game and classes first.

What would you tell parents who don;t let their children play Video Games?
I was part raised on video games, and I've turned out okay. Video Games are a part of society nowadays, and its hard to ignore their influence. Sure, there is the revery real issue of kids playing games that are both too violent and way above their age rating, but there are tons of great age appropriate games and they can really help a kids growth and development. I constantly thank games for helping expand my imagination the way they did, and teach me storywriting in a different format, as well as tons of morals.

If you were going to get a gaming tattoo, what would you get and what is it's significance to you?
I would probably get either a keyblade from Kingdom Hearts, or one of Yuna's Staffs from Final Fantasy X surrounded by Pyreflies. I'd pick these 2 because the games mean so much to me and I've shared my experiences in them with my boyfriend. We've both gamed a lot, in a lot of different genres on consoles, but we've always come back to those two.

When you aren't gaming, what are some of your other time-passing hobbies?
These days it's rare that I'm not gaming! When I'm not gaming, I'm either writing my blog, reading blogs or watching films.

* Let's hope after this, She'll start reading Nerdette At Large more often.*

Do you enjoy games, even when there aren't any playable female characters?
I do. I'm aware that it's an issue that is improving in the games industry, and it does make me feel optimistic about the future. The best thing is, a lot of games coming out now, tend to feature DLC's later down the line that are based around the female characters in the story - Just look at the new Batman game, or the expat for the Evil Within, where you play as Inspector Kidman.

What are some up and coming games, that you are looking forward to?
Basically all of Bethesda's talk at E3 had me on the edge of my seat yelling excitedly! Im hugely excited for Fallout 4, Doom and Kingdom Hearts 3. I've been waiting so long, and now it's finally coming!

If you had the chance to say one thing to your favorite game's creator/publisher what would it be and why?
To all the game publishers who made the games I loved so much in my childhood; thank you for making my childhood magical. Whether I was exploring hte 3 continents of Final Fantasy 8 with Squall, Quistis, Zell and the crew, or freeing dragons with Spyro, you helped me to grow up with an overactive imagination, always dreaming and hoping for something more. Also, thanks for the Tetris addiction. It's come in handy so many times in my adult life.
