Comics Roundup #29: Batgirl and Birds of Prey 1-3

March 20, 2017

Hey Gang!

I'm back! Last week was a little rough, and while I wasn't really able to create content I was at least able to give you a video, and do some reading. So I'm back with my first comic post in like a month. I buy comics in spurts, and then I read them in spurts and then I write about them. That's usually how things work here at Nerdette At Large. I have three jobs and time is a little scarce among them right now. I really wish I had the balls and the following, to quit my job and just work on my blog full time, I'm sure I could make it into a sustainable business, if only I had the time to work on it. However, bills can't be paid with wants and dreams right?

I fell in love with Batgirl during Gail Simone's run. There's just something about Simone's writing that is just so authentic and honest. Then that gave way to the Tarr, Fletcher and Stewart run. While their writing did have some social issues that needed to be addressed (transphobia) on the whole it was as diverse as I had ever seen the D.C. universe. I fell in love with the art, and I collected all the issues.
Now we have Batgirl and Birds of Prey written by the Benson sisters, who will be at C2E2. Another reason why I'm working so hard. For the first time, I want to attend C2E2 for the entire weekend and cosplay all three days. So definitely needed to scrounge up a little more for that. It's not that the series is bad, do not take that from this, but I'm just not into it as much as the other two.
Barbara finds out that someone is selling information to the mafia in the area by the name of Oracle, her old alias. I was really hoping that Frankie was going to become Oracle with this reboot, but it appears to be going a whole 'nother direction. In order to help her track down the bad guys this time, she enlists the help of Dinah, Black Canary, on what she thinks will be a one trip folly, Babs has other plans however.
She has re-opened the Clocktower, and they've begun their search for the person at fault, along the way they meet Helena Bertinelli, who we all know as Huntress, but she's hardly called that. She apparently was an integral part of Spyral, but since I didn't read that I have no idea what's going on with that front. The thing that people seem to get hung up on about Huntress is that she kills. What people don't seem to realize is that she only goes after literally the scum of the earth. People who killed her family and will kill others. I'm sorry, but I say "Go Get Em, Girl!" Plus, she's taking down the Mafia, responsible for murder, drugs and sex trafficking, not like they sell ice cream on the corner and make an honest living.
It seems that they've finally moved away from Gordon being Batman, because that was just super weird to me, so I'm glad that's over. He still makes appearances in this series, mostly as an over protective father, so nothing new there. Babs and Dinah meet Helena as she attempts to murder their prime suspect in the Oracle caper. They begrudgingly decide to team up. One thing that really stuck out to me is that Barbara seems very suspicious of everyone around her. Which if you think about it makes sense, only a few people knew about Oracle, so it's possible that she has been betrayed. However, she makes a habit out of calling out Helena and making sure that she is watched every moment.
She even snaps at Helena after she saves her father, and only after Gordon Thanks Helena, does she see the error of her ways. Of course, by then, Helena who didn't seem to patient anyway is pretty fed up and decides to leave the group. I bought one through six, so I'm working on the next three now.  One of the biggest things for me, is that they rehashed the story of The Killing Joke . I HATE THE KILLING JOKE. It was a one shot that has been around for way too long, Everyone knows the damn story, there is no reason to put it back into rotation, or even in her story. She's Batgirl, not Oracle, She can use her legs now and she's stronger than ever before, I was so absolutely angry when they rehashed that story. Absolutely Livid.
Like I said earlier it's not that I didn't enjoy the story. It's just different from the others, and I enjoyed both other runs a lot. Perhaps it will get better with time, it is only the beginning of the series, but I really had to push to get through the art. That's a big thing for me is the art. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it shouldn't distract from the story it should help it along.

Adventures With Spokhette #13: Pizza and Pints

March 10, 2017

Hey Gang!

Alex and I were feeling pizza this Sunday. The general place we normally get pizza from is closed on Sunday. So we decided to go do a little exploring and find a new pizza place. We decided to go try out Pies and Pints for the first time. I don't think I talk about it much on the blog, but it's pretty rare that I go drinking. When I do have an alcoholic beverage, I'm usually with friends and family, and it's very rarely more than 1. So while Alex was excited to see their pint selection, I went with a Mello Yello.

Pies and Pints can be found Downtown or in Liberty Township. As Alex and I hate parking downtown we went for the latter option. Liberty was a decent drive, so by the time we got there, we were famished. Even though we went in the afternoon on a Sunday, the place was packed, and it didn't take long to get a table.
Our waitress was super nice, and didn't look at us like we were insane for all the food that we ordered. We got two appetizers, the Potato Pizza Skins. Which is a small pizza, with mashed potatoes, ooey gooey cheddar cheese, REAL bacon pieces and chives. It was amazeballs. I think we only brought home one slice. We also got their char grilled wings. It definitely lived up to the title. I thought we could choose a sauce, but apparently they were made in a dry rub of cilantro lime garlic and schiracha. I thought they were going to be too spicy, but I could barely feel the kick. We didn't even bother to photograph them.

Then on the main course! Originally we were going to get two small pizza's, which are 10'' there. Once we told our waitress what we planned to get on them however, she said we were better off with getting a large half and half, and we obliged her. On my half, a white pizza, with double heapings of shrimp, spinach, salami, mushrooms and extra cheese. (of course) On Alex's Half, a red pizza, with Pepperoni, sausage and roasted garlic.

Another interesting thing about this place is they place the cheese under the toppings. I definitely wasn't used to that, but it was very delicious none the less. We each got about 4 slices, and I'm still munching on mine as I write this on Tuesday.  The place is very eclectic, lots of elephants everywhere, and it was like they copied my Ipod playlist, so it definitely felt like Home to me. I would definitely go again.

Since we like Pizza SO MUCH, we have taken it upon ourselves, to check out our fair city and attempt to visit a pizzeria every Sunday. We usually have so much time to kill on those days and what better way to do it, then to stuff ourselves silly?! We're thinking about checking out Strongs or Mod Pizza next.

Do you have any pizzerias for us? What's your Fav pizza topping? Lets chat about it on Twitter!

Adventures With Spokhette #12: Anatheum + Mt. Washington Cemetery

March 8, 2017

Hey Gang!

I've had a lot of free time lately. I've gotten back into the habit of carrying around my camera, and I've been making sure to at least take a single photo for every outside adventure. The pictures in this post are all from about three weeks ago. I literally visited three different places in one day, but didn't want to overload you with pictures or information. I've been working on shortening my blog  posts to a couple of paragraphs. I'm not sure if people are liking or disliking this, no one has ever told me otherwise.

I had no idea what an Athenaeum was, so I decided to go check it out. It was a closed campus. I'm guessing something similar to a college for Pastors. The architecture and the statues were so absolutely stunning, I just had to photograph them. I'm always so worried about getting in trouble for trespassing.

I got the opportunity to check out the graveyard that I passed on my way to the school I was going to be photographing. There were quite a few empty gravestones. I was a little scared honestly. I absolutely love exploring my city. I 'm working on getting out of the house more. My activities are pretty good at keeping me inside the house. I've made it my mission that I will definitely be getting out the house more often this year.

In other good news, I hit 400 followers on Instagram! I don't know what brought them, but I hope that they stay. Come see what all the hype is about.

February Favorites

March 6, 2017

Hey Gang!

Can you believe yet ANOTHER month has passed? 2017 is already moving way too fast for me! February was an anniversary month for me! It marked the 3rd year at my 2nd job and a full year being a children's photographer. It's awesome. March is the anniversary of Nerdette At Large, so I'm very excited to make it another year. I'm thinking about doing some special stuff, but I'm not sure what I want to do yet.

Here are a few of my favorites for this month:

- I started to stream again! I haven't decided whether I want to use Twitch or Youtube. My latest video is up on Youtube, I played God Eater 2 for about an hour. I'm trying to set it up so I do it at least once a week.

- Falling in Love with Film Photography. I've been using A Nikon N65 and I finally GOT a lens for my Pentax and it's so glorious! I got it for a steal on Ebay, and it's practically perfect.

- I finally Ordered my PS VITA, and it arrived! It's a Japanese Import so I expected it to take a lot longer than I thought it would, but it arrived super fast, and with a box and everything! It's the cutest thing I've ever seen, and I CAN NOT wait to start doing some serious gaming with it!! I did a whole unboxing video, which you can find here.

- Alex and I bought real Furniture! We took a small trip to Ikea and got the most adorable furniture! I got a rolling three level cart in rust, and an aquamarine Shelving unit with three drawers. Alex got an all white desk with a pull out extension, he's in love.

- I've been trying to draw at least once a day. It's been a while since I drew before I bought my sketchbook, so I'm completing at least 5 pictures a week. They aren't great, but they are definitely an improvement from before. All the illustrators that I love, they all say, that the key is practice.

- On Valentine's Day, Alex got me a Victini and a Jirachi Plushie! I'm very excited to add plushies to my collection, and that they are pokemon related! Plus, Victini is my favorite, so much so I got a tattoo.

- I'm a huge fan of illustration. I follow a lot of them on Instagram and twitter. I finally had the opportunity to purchase stickers from Ieafy and they are the cutest things on the planet. I ordered the Electic Pokemon Sheet, Alolan Pokemon Sheet, and a Chao Sheet, from SONIC! When I saw them them a week ago, it was instant nostalgia, I definitely needed them in my life and on my stuff.

- Drooling over Kiera Please's + Ashe's Cosplays. I'm super interested in having these lovely ladies on the blog, but the way they cosplay my childhood, these ladies need mad props!

I'm dreaming up Cosplays for C2E2. What are some of your faves? Let's Chat about them on Twitter!

Adventures With Spokhette #11: Guardian Angels Cemetery

March 3, 2017

Hey Gang!

One thing I love about my day job is that it takes me all over the city! The other day I happened to be in a really nice part of town and after I got off I went to explore a little bit. All along the same street were two cemeteries AND an Athenaeum. If you are like me and have no flipping idea what an Athenaeum is, do not worry! It's basically a Pastorial College. The architecture is absolutely beautiful I was so astounded. I was only able to get a few pictures there, because I wasn't a student, and felt kind of tresspass-y. I love to explore, but I'm a law abiding citizen after all!

I walked all the way through Guardian Angels Cemetery, there were some really pretty monuments, that I had never seen before. When I arrived, the grounds keepers was there, and she was the sweetest thing ever. Like I said earlier, I'm deathly afraid of getting in trouble for walking through "public" places. So I asked if it was ok for me to walk around and photograph. She says people go through the cemetery all the time, so It's not just me!!

I told Alex that I was checking out graveyards and he totally fed me the night of the living dead line, They're coming to get you Gabriella. They're coming to get you! Which he does all the time while I look around and it isn't too much of a big deal. It's more funny then scary. I was doing this in broad daylight, so I was raring to go, and then as I walked around the top there were 12 freshly dug graves, and one completely open one!!! I nearly had a heart attack!

Have you checked out any cool places lately?! Let's talk about it on Twitter!
