Favorite Films of 2016

December 31, 2016

Hey Gang!

Almost complete! Today Film, and Tomorrow Comics! I know it's a Saturday, but I couldn't leave Comics out! They're my bread and butter. I watched quite a few films this year, my wallet was telling me while I was outlining this post, but I will only be mentioning a few. I also realized that I liked these films so much that every single one mentioned has a post dedicated to it, so this will be supa short. lets GO! I am literally dying for the new year to start, c'mon 2017!!

- Now You See Me Pt. 2: Really needs no introduction or review. I have an entire post dedicated to it, along with outfit details. I loved it so much I went and bought the blu-ray. I have a ps3 and a ps4, wanna know how many blu-rays I own? 3 I own 3. I love the characters in this one, they were so fleshed out this time. I love that all the holes in the first film are fleshed out and filled in the sequel. Sometimes Sequels leave a little to be desired, but I think this one did well, and my favorite part is the card scene.

- Return of the Caped Crusaders: As a ginormous fan of 66' Batman view this vid for more, I absolutely had to see this movie when it came out. I absolutely loved it, of course there were a few issues, but nothings perfect right? If you wanna know more, you can read my review here.

- Star Trek Beyond: My namesake. Need I say more? This movie made me cry, for all my feels, you can read the HUGE post I dedicated to it.

- Batman: Bad Blood: Other than an amazing Taylor Swift Parody. This animated film broke some barriers. The first time we saw Batwing animated, and can we talk about how he's named after the apendage of the bat, like he couldn't become his own person? The only Character of Color? Come better D.C.  Also, the introduction of Batwoman, a spattering of humor, but we only got a peak at these two, I need more D.C. I need more. Heres a full review.

- Zootopia: A Masterpiece. This film gave me all the feels, and only made me more adamant about demanding a safe place. Here's the full review.

- Little Witch Academia: Before this, I'd never seen anything from Trigger, but I am a woman obsessed. I watched both short films, but I definitely need more. My favorite Character is Sucy and she has already climbed to nearly the top of my Cosplay list. I NEED to wear her to a convention, perhaps I'll unveil her for C2E2, if you'd like to read the full review, it can be found here.

Series #26: Favorite Television Shows of 2016

December 30, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm beginning to run out of days, so I am combining topics. I will be considering Anime as part of this topic just to conserve space. I know they are two wildly things. I watched a lot of television this year, I was surprised about just how many I completed before the year ended. I generally don't watch a lot of television but thanks to Hulu, CrunchyRoll and Netflix, I had the perfect companions for the job.

- Tanaka-Kun is Always Listless: I won't go into much detail about this title, I wrote an entire post about it, after I finished it. I absolutely loved it. I thought it was funny and refreshing and I
definitely have a soft spot for Tanaka-kun. I recommend it to every single person I can, I feel that it is a must-watch. If you'd like to know more you can read my full review.

- New Game: I wrote about the first 4 episodes here. I have since continued the series. Its just a cute, fun and adorable series. A female run Gaming agency, creating a new game in a series of rpg's for the PZ3 and there's an office cat, what else is needed?

- Luke Cage: I also write a full series review for this series. Alex and I finished it the weekend it came out. I won't expand too much. I loved the series, but not the way it ended, and I want a lot more. so Sweet Christmas, Netflix needs to hurry up!

- Bunkuro Stray Dogs: Is a super unique anime that I am currently into. I am working my way through Season 1 and I am very glad that Season 2 is already there waiting on me. I much rather burn through a series than wait for the next season, if you didn't know by now, I am NOT a patient person. The series follows a Detective Agency who have special abilities, based on Japanese Writers. I am absolutely in LOVE. Osamu is currently my favorite Character.

- Pretty Little Liars: I've been there since the beginning, and I honestly have to say, that I need to know how it ends. I was there for every cliffhanger, every fingernail biting moment, and with this final season coming up, I am waiting for bated breath to figure out what happens next, and all I have to say is I better See Spencer next season or ELSE!

- Stitchers: Honorable Mention. I practically blazed through the first season, just in time for the 2nd season to go onto Hulu, and then it just kind of stopped. I'm hoping that there is a 2nd half to the 2nd season, or that they are gearing up for a 3rd season, because I have to have more Camille! I just have to. She was my favorite character, and even kiersten is starting to grow on me. I have a season review here.

Favorite Music of 2016

December 29, 2016

Hey Gang!

Thought I would continue the momentum I've got going on right now. I generally don't talk about music on Nerdette At Large. Not because I don't listen to it, but simply because music just is. It's hard to quantify it. I've always admired music bloggers, because I don't understand how to describe music except for how it makes me feel.
You'll notice there are quite a few rap songs on my list. Here's my criteria. There are three things that make a rapper decent to me. Lyrical difficulty. I love learning rap verses, it's a guilty pleasure. Musical Flow. This can pertain to the beat or how the lyrics are crafted together. I like a super smooth flow.
Rappers like Chief Keef and Jay-Z turn me off because to me they sound like cars trying to turn over. Put- put- put. The songs message. What are they trying to tell me? Even if they used SAT words and phrases put to the smoothest jazz beat they could muster, only to talk about selling drugs and or getting "bitches", then what was the point?  So here are a few songs that made me feel, or were on repeat for the year of 2016.

- Hamilton, The OST: Hamilton has been in the news quite a bit this year. A hip-hop Broadway play, re-telling the life of Alexander Hamilton, the face of the $10 bill, with a full cast of color, who has quite an open door policy when it comes to their opinions of the new POTUS and friends. I had never heard any of the music but had read all the love on the timeline, and then discovered the entire soundtrack on youtube. I have been listening to it on repeat since, I almost have all the words down. Honorable mention songs are: Burn, Aaron Burr, Sir and Non Stop.

- Body Language- San E: San E, a Korean rapper, has been on my phone for quite some time, but this song he outdid himself. I downloaded his newest album and also had Dishes and Sour Grapes on repeat for quite some time, I think I even mentioned them in a monthly favorites post. However, the lyrical prowess presented in this song and the topic, gives it a spot near the top of my list. The video is pretty funny as well.

- Mama- Louie: Louie is making his solo career after the success of Geeks, and I am absolutely loving it. I have about four or five of his solo tracks on my playlist, but the reason Mama makes the list is partly the lyrical prowess, and the subject matter. What can I say? I dig a rapper that can express himself and what he's trying to say flawlessly to a beat. Even without speaking the language, I can follow the beat, and sometimes that just good enough for me. It also reminds me of D-Pryde's homage track to his mom : Proud.

- Good Times-Paloalto: Another repeat song of the year. This is the smoothest rap song I'd heard in quite some time. Every time I hear it I just sway. There's just something about it.

Cake- Melanie Martinez: A fan since her Voice win, this song has definitely risen through the ranks. It even made it to the Karaoke lineup! A pretty decent anthem for women who are more than just a pretty face as well. I just dig her style, she's so unabashedly herself.

What have you guys been listening to this year? Lets have a chat on Twitter about it!

My Favorite Games of 2016

December 28, 2016

Hey Gang!

Can you guys believe that the end of the year is almost near? I can't believe that it went by so fast. The beginning wasn't bad, but the last couple of months, have been pretty disasterous, at least for me. I'm not going to rehash my feeling about the election, but if you are interested you can read all about it here.
I watched a ton of great movies, read a bunch of books, and played quite a few games, I figured I would talk about a few of my favorite games today! For 2016 I had a PS4 and a Nintendo 3DSXL and a "new" 3DSXL. My grouping of favorites is always organized by how much I enjoyed the video game, not how popular it is, or was. I tend to buy games after their prime, so there maybe a few older games in the bunch. So without further ado, here we go!

- Pokemon Sun 3DS: I pre-ordered both versions because I couldn't decide which one I wanted to play. So, I preordered both and then brought them home. There's a whole video about why I made my decision, and I will be writing about the differences that I noticed while playing and that will be a post in the future. I feel like I'm doing a much better job of training and evolving my pokemon, I 've made it far as the third island and fighting the Kahuna. I even caught a Pichu evolve into Pikachu, which just made my life. Pichu's only evolve, if they love you and they are leveled up.

- Project X Zone 2 3DS: This is a game that has been on a constant cycle all year, I think I'm down to the last few levels, but they just started to get all kind of crazy! This game is great as far as cross overs are concerned. It puts other games like Marvel V.S. Capcom to shame. I'm unsure why it is so difficult for different companies to license games like this, but they need to make it way easier, because the game is amazing!! I've been stuck on the same level for the past couple of weeks though, so I'm hoping to pass and complete the game soon!

- Pokemon: Omega Ruby 3DS: If you know anything about me, you'll know that I am a huge fan of pokemon. I own pretty much every game, and I've seen every movie. One thing I haven't done however, is complete a game. I wanted to do that with Omega Ruby, since they were pretty much rehashes of the original, but I have a problem keeping up with where I am and staying organized if I stray away from a game for too long. That's pretty much what happened here. Since I am already currently playing Sun, I fear that I won't be touching Ruby for quite some time, but I am hoping that I make some considerable headway later next year. One of my favorite features of this game was sneaking up on the pokemon shadows in tall grass. It made me feel like I was really there.

- RadioHammer 3DS: I don't want to go into full detail about this game here, because I actually wrote a decent post about it when I completed it this year. Its just a super fun rhythm game, that was easy to catch on and thoroughly enjoyable. I really push Tiny Cartridge anyway I can, not because they pay me or anything, but just because they are so informative when it comes to both mainstream and indie handheld games, and its awesome, to be so well informed.

- Tomb Raider PS4: When I was younger I can remember playing Tomb Raider for the Playstation and it was a fun time. But this edition for the PS4 has just surpassed everything that I remember. My heart jumps when something crazy happens, I breathe shallowly as I creep through the jungle and I jump right before I have to kill an animal, the game is so flipping life-like. My poor little ticker just can't handle the stress, but I had SO SO much fun playing it. Once I get my studio set up in the new house I will definitely be playing a lot of PS4 games next year!

- Sailor Moon Drops (Phone): Special Mention. I generally don't blog about phone games, but I have spent some serious playhours on this game. I can play it pretty much anywhere as long as my phone stays charged, and I am loving the nostalgia of seeing all of my favorite characters again as I do one of my favorite things ever, complete puzzle challenges.

What are some games that you guys are loving this year? Lets chat about it on twitter.

I'm finally in the new house with internet. I'm so excited to get back to my usual blogging life, in my comfy bed instead of being surrounded by people in a super busy and loud coffee shop.

I talk about lots of events that happen between the beginning of July and almost the end of August. I cover all the way up to the bridal Shower for my friend Bridget, I figured that I would talk about the bachelorette party and the actual wedding in another post, because I don't want to flog you down with lots of content, so I will show you that another time. November Favorites

December 26, 2016

Hey Gang!

I know this probably a little late in the month to be doing favorites, but I say, who CARES?! I wanna tell you about all the things and events that I loved last month so here it goes.

Upgrading to a NEW 3DS. Even though, the circumstances surrounding the purchase are a little sad. See this video. I am very excited to be able to keep playing my games, and being prepared for anything new that comes my way. Plus, even I have to admit, that the new one looks pretty badass.

Surviving my 2nd season.  I am a child photographer. I photograph children from Infants to 5 years old. It is a stressful and yet very rewarding job. This was my 2nd season, and I was hired in the middle of my first season, so I didnt really get all of the stress that my fellow photographers had. This season I worked from beginning to end, and I am very very proud of myself.

Reaching Ch. 5 in Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney. I have had this game for a while now. I'm not sure if everyone plays games the way I do, but basically I'll chose the game I want to play and I'll play it until I get stuck. Then I take a break and try it again later, that happens quite a bit with Professor Layton games. It makes it very difficult for me to actually move through my backlog, BUT it gives me lots of room to slide in new games.

Getting my Wild hair back! I missed having colored hair so so so much! Its not that my jobs disprove of it or anything, it just gets hot sitting on top of my head in the summer, so I don't do it, and then this thing called bills got in the way, and by the time I realized it, it was already almost the end of the year. This color is called Emerald, I think I might try a purple next time.

- Reviving the Youtube. I feel like this is a favorite every couple of months. December is definitely the month for my youtube. Not only am I uploading often, but also writing about it on the blog, and I'm doing much better with actually getting

Reviving the Youtube. I feel like this is a favorite every couple of months. December is definitely the month for my youtube, not only uploading often, but also writing about it on the blog, and I'm doing much better with actually getting the word out that I even have a youtube channel, because surprisingly, not a lot of people know about it. I even made a new header!

A letter to Santa Claus

December 23, 2016

Hey Gang!

Dear Santa,

I thought I would write this small post to you. I want to thank you for the wonderful things that you have brought me over the years. We have shared a wonderful 24 years together. This year, I want something a little different. If possible Santa, could we possibly talk about Politics? Can we talk about Reproductive rights? Can we talk about how to handle Trump? I have a super small list of things I want for Christmas this year Santa. It's okay if you can't get them to me by Christmas Day, only if you promise you'll work on it a little bit every year. Okay, here it goes.

- Reproductive Right Overhauls in policy.  We have the right to our bodies, I don't need politics interefering with my reproductive rights. I don't need men who don't seem to understand the definition and the effects of rape, deciding what I can and can't do with my body. If you could keep all abortion bans out of the senate that would be awesome. Also, if you could just send A lot of coal to the representatives voting into law things like there should be burials and funerals for fetal remains after abortions, that would be AMAZEBALLS.

- Explaining to Trump what makes him Racist. If you could just send a couple of elves down to his bedroom, perhaps the ghost of Christmas Past, to sit next to him and explain how his presidency could potentially misplace thousands of humans. How his "policies" could be dangerous for people of color, for people who are non-binary, or people who have a different sexual orientation from him. So if you could just stop by every couple of days to explain that to him, that would be pretty great.

- If you could train Elves to test Rape kits. At this moment there are thousands of Rape Kits around America alone that are untested. Would it be possible to get a few of your elves to help with the backlog. I mean they only create toys one week a year right? So technically they could be borrowed to help out with the massive backlog? There are tons of women and men, who are waiting on results and justice, and I would just love for this to be a thing.

I'm pretty sure that these are the only things that I want for Christmas. Thanks for listening to me.

The One Time: I was on a Podcast

December 21, 2016

Hey Gang!

I've been so excited to tell you guys about this for a while, and I just got to tell you that I suck at keeping secrets, so this has literally taken up all of my will power. I was just browsing through my timeline on Twitter, which is my most used social media, if you were wondering. There was Heroes and Coffee talking about putting together a podcast about Street Fighter.
As a girl who enjoys being a gamer, its pretty rare that I come across an opportunity like this, so of course, I couldn't just ignore this golden goose egg. I Mentioned her, and unabashedly left a message about how much I enjoyed Street Fighter. A couple of days later, I received a message from the creator of the Lex Factor Show, asking if I would like to be a guest on his podcast about Street Fighter. Um... I literally couldn't say yes fast enough.
After blogging for 8 years, to have the ability to bring light to my little blog and have a new avenue to talk about the awesome things I do here, it was amazing to plug Nerdette At Large on a podcast with an audience similar to my own? I'd have to be mad as a hatter to turn that down. Seriously.  The whole week leading up to the recording, I read up on every little bit of Street Fighter back story I could.
I logged favorite characters, original creators, and characters. I wanted to make sure I was backed with as much information I could be, and then it arrived, and because if I had no bad luck, I 'd have no luck at all. I logged on a little late, and freaked out when no one was online. However, they are an hour behind me, Someone was definitely smiling down on me.
I was a little nervous at the beginning. It was my very first podcast after all, but it didn't take me long to get more comfortable. Soon it had already been an hour! I'm currently waiting to record the 2nd part, and I can't wait to tell you guys all about it!

Have you guys ever been on a podcast? Any tips for me? Lets talk about it on twitter!

Nerdette Minute #34: Movie Trailer Overload

December 19, 2016

Hey Gang!

I had so much fun filming and making sure that my videos could be seen on my blog, which I rarely do, and I think I'm going to keep it up. I'm usually super concerned with when videos go up and when posts go up during the week, that usually there isn't "room" for my youtube videos, but these past two weeks have given me a few things to think about when it comes to my blog and I definitely think that a post to let you know when I have a new youtube video will definitely be staying. This one's a little longer than the others, I cover 9 trailers in this video. Beauty and The Beast, Transformers, Unfortunate Events, La-La Land, Wonder Woman, Logan, Power Rangers, The Mummy, and Pirates of the Carribean 5.

Don't forget to like and subscribe my videos, so I know I should make more! Lets talk about Trailers on Twitter!! I'm always up for good conversation!

Adventures With Spokhette #4: Findlay Market

December 5, 2016

Hey Gang!

I made a promise to myself that I was going to get out and do more things this year. So when I had the opportunity to go out with Alex and his parents to explore Findlay Market, for the first time, I definitely was going to take them up on it! I was always driving past but not able to explore.

I took all of the pictures. One of the first places I visited was Mavericks. Mavericks is a small company that creates unique flavors of chocolate. I spent a good while in this store, deliberating on what kind of chocolate I was going to get. Buying chocolate for myself is super difficult, because I have a peanut allergy, so if they can't guarantee that they are nut free, I usually give it a pass. They make small turtle chocolates, and I picked up just one to taste, because they were 2.00 a piece. But they were so delicious I had to go back and get a small box to take with me. I finally picked the white chocolate pieces that are stuffed with Mango Puree. They were AMAZING!
After walking around for a little bit we explored a tea shop, and I found flyers for what seemed like an amazing play, but I was unable to get a day off for work to go see it. I was tres sad. After all the walking, we even got to explore an awesome furniture store with the most beautiful bedroom set. There's finally room for it in the new place, but it costs way too much to purchase right now. I got the most delicious Pepperoni stromboli from Taste of Belgium, and although it was still doughy in places, it was delicious!! I of course had to try at least one of the pastry shops that were littered throughout the market, On our way back to the car, we stopped at the farmers Market and there was a guy selling eclairs. Alex and I shared a blueberry one and it was magnifico! Not only did it have blueberry icing on top, but also blueberry filling it was magical! I also got to see my mother that day! We met up a couple of streets away in the downtown Cincinnati area, to go see a new ballet, Coppelia. It was supposed to be a brand new piece put on by the Cincinnati Ballet, at the Aronoff, one of our favorite places to spend our time. I was honestly a little dissapointed in the ballet. It seemed off to a really good start but then it kind of just fizzled out. It was almost like they forgot about the ending.
I was pretty proud of my outfit, even though it wasn't really weather appropriate. I needed something that was both classy and casual, because it was just a regular outing in the morning and then something a little classier in the afternoon to the night. So I went with a red velvet dress with a open back, and contrasting ribbon tie from Hot Topic, and purple cat ears. Even mom thought I looked pretty, which is a far cry from her "oh Gab" reply to a good portion of my outfits. I'm working on putting together a vlog about the experience pretty soon. Don't forget to subscribe to my youtube channel, there are three videos up already this week, I've been on a roll lately.

Have you been to Findlay Market before? What's your favorite shop? Lets chat about it on Twitter.

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~

Adventures With Spokhette #3: Thanksgiving.

December 2, 2016

Hey Gang!

I hope your turkey day was fun had by all! I hope that you found time to spend the day with your families, friends and loved ones. I hope you found that the holiday isn't all cheers and that you found it in your heart to donate to those less fortunate to yourselves, especially the protestors of the DAPL, at Standing Rock. If you haven't and have extra money now, here are the links that you can visit to help them out. Lets not forget that Thanksgiving has the one of the bloodiest beginnings and histories.
My Sister hosted Thanksgiving this year. It was also the first time my father was meeting the New boyfriend. No need for alarm, it went decently well, no bloodshed and the like. We had an entire table spread. My father was in charge of the Turkey and the Ham. My mother did Mac N Cheese, Corn and Green Bean Casserole. . I was in charge of Stuffing and Mashed Potatos, and Alex made twice baked potatoes that were just to die for. Literally, like all of them were gone before leftovers were even thought of.
We spent the night watching a horrible football game, listening to 90's jams in the background and playing Heads up, for hours. It was an absolutely wonderful night, full of filled bellies, and raucous laughter. It was a great night had by all.

How did you spend your thanksgiving weekend? I hope you enjoyed lots of delicious food. Lets trade recipes on Twitter!

Comics Roundup #27: New 52 Nightwing Vol. 1-2

November 30, 2016

Hey Gang!

You guys I have seriously been sleeping on the library when it comes to getting comics from the library. I'm not sure if it's because I never noticed them, when I was visiting libraries in Cincinnati. I was much more interested in romance novels and this sense of grandeur that I didn't really have for myself. When I moved down to Kentucky, Nothing was the same, I was in a new place, surrounded by new people, and I only knew Alex, and had met his parents like once. So I think I gravitated to the graphic novels and comics section to the library because it was something I recognized. I had gotten way more into comics around the time I started dating Alex, and it was kind of a safe haven for me.

You guys know that Dick Grayson is my favorite Robin ever, but if I have to be honest , I haven't always liked his career as Nightwing. I think I prefer his stint as Batman, or his Robin days. So when I saw the entire Graphic Novel series from New 52 by Barrows and Higgins, I knew I had to give him another chance. The last Batman comic I read was little Gotham, you can read my feels here. Snyder's series was a little dark, so I didn't check it out. I have the first Graphic Novel, because it introduces the Court of Owls which is my favorite bad guy ever, but I didn't bother to continue reading on.

I love how they connect the story to Dick's Beginnings. It's such a unique spin on an old tale. That's something I've always loved about comics, their ability to recon anything. The first novel, gave us a decent inside look at Dick's Circus life. Before and After Bruce, His childhood friends and Mentors. "The true purpose of Haly's Circus". There's still lots of murder and action, all though the blood was easy to stomach, maybe I'm just biased about Grayson. *Shrug*

I love that Dick is not only head of the Circus, but is actually interested in preserving it and finding new ways for it to flourish. I don't love that he and Babs aren't a thing, or that they are laying seeds between Sonya (Offspring of his parents Murderer) but I guess I'll live. It's not like He's real, and even if he was I'm not single, so that's a fantasy for another time.

I really must say that I love the flashbacks to Old Gotham, and the connected stories of Cobb and Dick. I'm a little concerned though, they never mentioned if Bruce was okay after Cobb escaped. I want to know more about the owls, and their freezing methods. I would also love to know whose actually behind the masks. They always say Gotham's finest, but who would that entail?

Cinema #26: Dr. Strange (Slight Spoilers)

November 28, 2016

Hey Gang!

Due to the severe begging of my fiance, I went to go see Dr. Strange this past weekend. I want to preface this by saying, that I do not agree with the direction Disney and Marvel Studios took in the casting and production of this film. Now that I have that out of the way, here's what I thought.

To see the ability to control time as a perversion but not that every sorcerer should have the ability to control their own destiny, there had to be something fundamentally wrong with Mordor. Strange paid honor to the ancient one's loss by paying homage to her teachings. She may have broken natural law, no matter how long ago, perhaps when she was younger, and did not have the proper teachings, as she has bestowed on others. Perhaps her redemption was in her teaching of others.
Just like in Slytherin, it's not necessarily the life you are given, but you ability to make the best of it. My biggest issue with Strange is that no mater what enlightenment he is shown, what magic he is presented with, even the ability to astral project, or a fucking cloak that's sentient, he was trying to rationalize it. This is so much bigger than him. Just like she said before she passed, "It's not all about you." To have so much disrespect for a culture other than your own, just because you can't see the potential of what is being presented to you, like that really angered me.

" Only those with an open mind, have the ability to learn all."

Just because a movie looks good, or may even, dare I say enjoyable, doesn't detract from any wrong-doing it may have caused. Whitewashing is a SERIOUS issue in Hollywood, and for a company who has kind of been a foundation for comics with diverse and inclusive characters, it pains me to my very soul, that they suddenly have forgotten their roots. There were still plenty of parts, in the movie, that made me cringe, and I honestly just wish they had listened to criticisms, and fixed their issues. If you are having trouble understanding why so many people are upset about white-washing, feel free to click the picture, it has a great and informative thread about why entire cultures of people are not satisfied with being Stand bys in their OWN MOVIES.
Lets talk about White washing, Ghost in the Shell, and Dr. Strange on Twitter, I love a good chat!

A Chat with: Emily Kirby

November 23, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to bring you an interview not only with one of my best friends,  but an amazing fantasy Author! Today, we got to sit down with Emily Kirby, creator of the Scribe of the Codex series, and figure out what makes her tick.

Tell us a little bit about Yourself.

I'm a hardcore nerd belonging to several fandoms: such as Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Digimon, Sherlock Holmes, and most Magical Girl Anime. My imagination is probably my greatest talent, and I have a morbid sense of humor about me. One of the things I have discovered about myself through writing, is just how spiritual I am. In ways, writing is one of the ways I communicate with God and He with me. I never started out trying to write that, but it always shows up.

Why do you write?

I write mostly because it keeps my sane and happy. I can't imagine myself never being able to write. It's very similar to breathing to me. I want to create stories that help people in their lowest times, just like all my favorite books did for me. My biggest dream is to have someone come up to me and say that my books changed their world.

Your stories surround such unique concepts, such as a scribe for the goddess of horror, How do you come up with this stuff?

A lot of my character concepts are just me wanting to see different kinds of characters do stuff. In many ways it answers the question, Who would I want to read about? I have to say though that Scribe characters are rather special to me, since I often have arguments with my own muse, when I'm stuck, or she gives me a new idea when I'm working on another project. It's one of the reasons I have three on-going book series that take place in the same universe, even though that is a very insane idea.

Walk us through a typical day.

My typical day is spent 1/3 looking for a steady paying job, so I'm not a starving artist, 1/3 pre-writing and getting ideas, and 1/3 actually writing a book. Sometimes the amount of time shifts between those things if I'm on a roll, I can spend the whole day doing nothing but writing.

Tell us a little bit about your latest book.

The Silver Codex is in the style of a horror anthology with different stories from different people in one novel, but readers shouldn't get comfortable with that. As the series continues, changers will come to all the characters and things will be shaken up. I hope the readers will be shocked by some of the twists and turns. Xarissa's journey is very much like mine, when it comes to horror.
We both started out as Scaredy Cats, but over time we have grown to a point where we are no longer scared, but actually enjoy the genre. There is going to be a lot more diving into the town's past. A lot of the relationships and ties forming will continue in the other books, and that will lead friends, families and even the town into becoming more loving and stronger together.

How do you turn around a bad day?

I talk to my friends who always seem to know how to cheer me up. I also watch Lupin the Third a lot, and I have a huge list of song that lift me up when I listen to them.
What do you do when you aren't writing?
I read a lot, and go walking often. I also try to vlog regularly for my youtube channel.

If you could live in a fictional world, where would you choose and why?

I think I might like living in the Digimon Universe. I could have my own Digimon friend who would fight evil with me. I'd also like to know what virtue my crest would be, I've never been able to make up my mind.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was young, I wanted to either take over the world, or become a nun. I was a weird kid.

A chat with: Katie O'Neil

November 21, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to bring you an interview with Katie O'Neil, the artist and writer behind that absolutely gorgeous comic Tea Dragon Society.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm Katie, a freelance illustrator and children's book author from New Zealand. I'm best known for my webcomic-turned-print Comic Princess Princess ever after. I draw a lot of dragons and cute creatures as well as stories about girls.

You create comics, what are a few of your favorites?

My top favourite comic of all time is Yotsuba by Kiyohiko Azuma. It's so sweet and funny and makes everyday events into an adventure. I also really love all of the Moomin comics by Tove Jannson, and Cat Person by Seo Kim.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

I'm extremely luck to be surrounded by amazingly talented artistic friends who inspire me everyday! I can't express how much strength I gain from their enthusiasm and creativity. More Broadly speaking, I really love Kawase Hasui, Mike Mignola and Amelie Flechais.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from the world around me, I do my best to enjoy everyday details and small happy things. To me, that's the most important way to have a good life.

What do you do to turn around a bad day?

I have a list of really fun self-care things that make me happy without being associated with drawing, like watching cooking shows, playing Animal Crossing, or baking. For me it's important to have positive activities that aren't tied to drawing, because that can have a lot of frustration attached to it.

Walk us through a typical day for you.

Since starting freelance full time, I take things very day by day. I'm extremely diurnal, and never get up later than about 8 am. I try to get most of my work done in the morning, because that's definitely when I'm most productive and focused! I eat when I get hungry, which usually results in a late breakfast and lunch. After Lunch, I usually just do sketches or reply to emails-nothing too heavy. I try to stop drawing for the day by 4-5 or so, as I really don't want to damage my wrists and hands.
How do you plan a chapter of your comic?

For me to feel confident in a story, I pretty much have to have the whole story scripted out before I begin the drawing of it. So at the moment, I fortunately have a solid script to work from when I start each chapter.

If you could live in any fictional world, what would you choose and why?

Definitely Pokemon! I've wanted to ever since I was a kid, it just seems so idyllic and happy, and you have adventures and go exploring so easily.

Do you have any advice for novice artists?

Practice a lot, but don't let drawing become a chore for you. If there's something you love to draw, draw it and don't worry about whether it's self-indulgent or silly. Remember that you have something special to offer the world, and while influences are important, the don't need to take your style in order for it to be good. You're a blend of all your experiences, and so it your art, which is what makes it so cool and interesting!

How would you describe you art style?

Colorful and simple, without much rendering or shading. I've never been very good at either, and I've been a lot happier since I embraced that.

If you could work with another artist or write, who would your dream collaborations be?

Pretty much any of my friends could walk up to me with an idea and I'd be excited about it- I'm mostly inspired by people who are passionate about characters, and all of my friends are!

How did Tea Dragon Society Come to be?

I kind of drew the dragons as a one-off illustration- just something simple and cute for fun. They really took and off and people began asking me about the world so I began fleshing it out and it pretty much kept going.

Film Adventures #1

November 16, 2016

Hey Gang!

Monday's post was a touch on the solemn side, so I thought I would brighten it up a bit, by doing something a little different. I wanted to use the end of the year to create some new content for you guys, but also new types of content. I've always liked Photography, but I don't honestly know if I'm any good at it. So, I thought I would go on little adventures with my Instax Mini that Alex bought me for my birthday and would later blog about it.
I went to see my sister's new place recently, now that it is properly lived in, I helped her move in a couple of months ago. She had all the cousins over, and it was just a great old time! I hadn't had all of my cousins in one place in a really long time, so it was a blast to be all together and to catch up. We had Gold Star Chili, played copious rounds of board games, and a couple of arcade fighters.
This time really reminded me of my childhood, and how long I had been depriving myself of gaming and fun, in exchange for an "adult Life". I want to get better at time management and balancing though, I had so many things planned for the month of October, but work had been so busy, that I wasn't able to do anything extra, I was barely getting out the bare minimum of posts.
I knew it had been a while since I played an arcade fighter, because of my GOD my fingers were killing me. They were all stiff and brittle, and ached something fierce! It was such a weird feeling, because I used to play button-mashers all the time! I even played competitively in the convention circuit and I was pretty good if I did say so myself. After not seeing my cousins in so long, of course I had to take all of the pictures.

A Note to My Readers

November 14, 2016

 Hello My Lovely Gang Members,

This post will be a little different. I have been writing Nerdette At Large in Various forms since before I graduated High School. A lot of you have been around since then, and I thank you for your patience. I have finally narrowed down, exactly what kind of message and community I want to have with Nerdette at Large Readers, and I am coming pretty close to perfecting it, I think.
I wanted to write this letter to you because everyone is having Post-Election feelings, and I also have some to share. I want to say that I am extremely disappointed and scared that Trump is our new Potus. Jokes aside, he has actually won the election and will be in charge of others lives, after January and I am terrified. He has only been elected for about 5 days and already reports of People of Color, being bullied, harassed and attacked have been flooding in. I'm not saying that he is the reason for the "sudden increase" but he has given those who types of people, a voice and a leader. I personally feel, that Donald Trump, doesn't have respect for anyone unless they are a cis white male. This is a major reason why intersectional feminism is so important. Some White women chose to overlook their gender/sex, and voted to "keep their privilege" instead, at the expense of others, who they are supposed to be allies to.

I want my readers, and others who may visit my website to know that Nerdette Minute and Nerdette At Large, will always be a safe haven for all people. All Ethnicities, all sexual Orientations, and all genders. As a Bi, Black Woman, with a safe haven for herself, how could I not offer it to others in need? I know that the next four years, will be a tough road, but we are strong, and we shall climb, and we shall persevere. I am not telling you that everything will be ok, because I don't know that it will. But I am saying, that as long as Nerdette At Large is standing, so am I, and that my arms are open wide to envelope you all into a safe place, of no judgment, and only love. I am always here to listen to anything you wish to tell me.
Feel free to contact me through Twitter, Email, or Instagram. My "Internet door" is always open. I also wanted to give a heartfelt thank you to all of my followers, over the weekend, I passed 500 followers on Twitter, and I honestly don't even know how it happened, but I thank you so much for your support.

Just Remember our gal Pal, Garnet " We are made of Love, and it's Stronger than you".

Until Next Time Gang,
Be safe, Be Nerdy. and Be aware.
