Comics Roundup #27: New 52 Nightwing Vol. 1-2

November 30, 2016

Hey Gang!

You guys I have seriously been sleeping on the library when it comes to getting comics from the library. I'm not sure if it's because I never noticed them, when I was visiting libraries in Cincinnati. I was much more interested in romance novels and this sense of grandeur that I didn't really have for myself. When I moved down to Kentucky, Nothing was the same, I was in a new place, surrounded by new people, and I only knew Alex, and had met his parents like once. So I think I gravitated to the graphic novels and comics section to the library because it was something I recognized. I had gotten way more into comics around the time I started dating Alex, and it was kind of a safe haven for me.

You guys know that Dick Grayson is my favorite Robin ever, but if I have to be honest , I haven't always liked his career as Nightwing. I think I prefer his stint as Batman, or his Robin days. So when I saw the entire Graphic Novel series from New 52 by Barrows and Higgins, I knew I had to give him another chance. The last Batman comic I read was little Gotham, you can read my feels here. Snyder's series was a little dark, so I didn't check it out. I have the first Graphic Novel, because it introduces the Court of Owls which is my favorite bad guy ever, but I didn't bother to continue reading on.

I love how they connect the story to Dick's Beginnings. It's such a unique spin on an old tale. That's something I've always loved about comics, their ability to recon anything. The first novel, gave us a decent inside look at Dick's Circus life. Before and After Bruce, His childhood friends and Mentors. "The true purpose of Haly's Circus". There's still lots of murder and action, all though the blood was easy to stomach, maybe I'm just biased about Grayson. *Shrug*

I love that Dick is not only head of the Circus, but is actually interested in preserving it and finding new ways for it to flourish. I don't love that he and Babs aren't a thing, or that they are laying seeds between Sonya (Offspring of his parents Murderer) but I guess I'll live. It's not like He's real, and even if he was I'm not single, so that's a fantasy for another time.

I really must say that I love the flashbacks to Old Gotham, and the connected stories of Cobb and Dick. I'm a little concerned though, they never mentioned if Bruce was okay after Cobb escaped. I want to know more about the owls, and their freezing methods. I would also love to know whose actually behind the masks. They always say Gotham's finest, but who would that entail?

Cinema #26: Dr. Strange (Slight Spoilers)

November 28, 2016

Hey Gang!

Due to the severe begging of my fiance, I went to go see Dr. Strange this past weekend. I want to preface this by saying, that I do not agree with the direction Disney and Marvel Studios took in the casting and production of this film. Now that I have that out of the way, here's what I thought.

To see the ability to control time as a perversion but not that every sorcerer should have the ability to control their own destiny, there had to be something fundamentally wrong with Mordor. Strange paid honor to the ancient one's loss by paying homage to her teachings. She may have broken natural law, no matter how long ago, perhaps when she was younger, and did not have the proper teachings, as she has bestowed on others. Perhaps her redemption was in her teaching of others.
Just like in Slytherin, it's not necessarily the life you are given, but you ability to make the best of it. My biggest issue with Strange is that no mater what enlightenment he is shown, what magic he is presented with, even the ability to astral project, or a fucking cloak that's sentient, he was trying to rationalize it. This is so much bigger than him. Just like she said before she passed, "It's not all about you." To have so much disrespect for a culture other than your own, just because you can't see the potential of what is being presented to you, like that really angered me.

" Only those with an open mind, have the ability to learn all."

Just because a movie looks good, or may even, dare I say enjoyable, doesn't detract from any wrong-doing it may have caused. Whitewashing is a SERIOUS issue in Hollywood, and for a company who has kind of been a foundation for comics with diverse and inclusive characters, it pains me to my very soul, that they suddenly have forgotten their roots. There were still plenty of parts, in the movie, that made me cringe, and I honestly just wish they had listened to criticisms, and fixed their issues. If you are having trouble understanding why so many people are upset about white-washing, feel free to click the picture, it has a great and informative thread about why entire cultures of people are not satisfied with being Stand bys in their OWN MOVIES.
Lets talk about White washing, Ghost in the Shell, and Dr. Strange on Twitter, I love a good chat!

A Chat with: Emily Kirby

November 23, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to bring you an interview not only with one of my best friends,  but an amazing fantasy Author! Today, we got to sit down with Emily Kirby, creator of the Scribe of the Codex series, and figure out what makes her tick.

Tell us a little bit about Yourself.

I'm a hardcore nerd belonging to several fandoms: such as Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Digimon, Sherlock Holmes, and most Magical Girl Anime. My imagination is probably my greatest talent, and I have a morbid sense of humor about me. One of the things I have discovered about myself through writing, is just how spiritual I am. In ways, writing is one of the ways I communicate with God and He with me. I never started out trying to write that, but it always shows up.

Why do you write?

I write mostly because it keeps my sane and happy. I can't imagine myself never being able to write. It's very similar to breathing to me. I want to create stories that help people in their lowest times, just like all my favorite books did for me. My biggest dream is to have someone come up to me and say that my books changed their world.

Your stories surround such unique concepts, such as a scribe for the goddess of horror, How do you come up with this stuff?

A lot of my character concepts are just me wanting to see different kinds of characters do stuff. In many ways it answers the question, Who would I want to read about? I have to say though that Scribe characters are rather special to me, since I often have arguments with my own muse, when I'm stuck, or she gives me a new idea when I'm working on another project. It's one of the reasons I have three on-going book series that take place in the same universe, even though that is a very insane idea.

Walk us through a typical day.

My typical day is spent 1/3 looking for a steady paying job, so I'm not a starving artist, 1/3 pre-writing and getting ideas, and 1/3 actually writing a book. Sometimes the amount of time shifts between those things if I'm on a roll, I can spend the whole day doing nothing but writing.

Tell us a little bit about your latest book.

The Silver Codex is in the style of a horror anthology with different stories from different people in one novel, but readers shouldn't get comfortable with that. As the series continues, changers will come to all the characters and things will be shaken up. I hope the readers will be shocked by some of the twists and turns. Xarissa's journey is very much like mine, when it comes to horror.
We both started out as Scaredy Cats, but over time we have grown to a point where we are no longer scared, but actually enjoy the genre. There is going to be a lot more diving into the town's past. A lot of the relationships and ties forming will continue in the other books, and that will lead friends, families and even the town into becoming more loving and stronger together.

How do you turn around a bad day?

I talk to my friends who always seem to know how to cheer me up. I also watch Lupin the Third a lot, and I have a huge list of song that lift me up when I listen to them.
What do you do when you aren't writing?
I read a lot, and go walking often. I also try to vlog regularly for my youtube channel.

If you could live in a fictional world, where would you choose and why?

I think I might like living in the Digimon Universe. I could have my own Digimon friend who would fight evil with me. I'd also like to know what virtue my crest would be, I've never been able to make up my mind.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

When I was young, I wanted to either take over the world, or become a nun. I was a weird kid.

A chat with: Katie O'Neil

November 21, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to bring you an interview with Katie O'Neil, the artist and writer behind that absolutely gorgeous comic Tea Dragon Society.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I'm Katie, a freelance illustrator and children's book author from New Zealand. I'm best known for my webcomic-turned-print Comic Princess Princess ever after. I draw a lot of dragons and cute creatures as well as stories about girls.

You create comics, what are a few of your favorites?

My top favourite comic of all time is Yotsuba by Kiyohiko Azuma. It's so sweet and funny and makes everyday events into an adventure. I also really love all of the Moomin comics by Tove Jannson, and Cat Person by Seo Kim.

Who are some of your favorite artists?

I'm extremely luck to be surrounded by amazingly talented artistic friends who inspire me everyday! I can't express how much strength I gain from their enthusiasm and creativity. More Broadly speaking, I really love Kawase Hasui, Mike Mignola and Amelie Flechais.

Where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from the world around me, I do my best to enjoy everyday details and small happy things. To me, that's the most important way to have a good life.

What do you do to turn around a bad day?

I have a list of really fun self-care things that make me happy without being associated with drawing, like watching cooking shows, playing Animal Crossing, or baking. For me it's important to have positive activities that aren't tied to drawing, because that can have a lot of frustration attached to it.

Walk us through a typical day for you.

Since starting freelance full time, I take things very day by day. I'm extremely diurnal, and never get up later than about 8 am. I try to get most of my work done in the morning, because that's definitely when I'm most productive and focused! I eat when I get hungry, which usually results in a late breakfast and lunch. After Lunch, I usually just do sketches or reply to emails-nothing too heavy. I try to stop drawing for the day by 4-5 or so, as I really don't want to damage my wrists and hands.
How do you plan a chapter of your comic?

For me to feel confident in a story, I pretty much have to have the whole story scripted out before I begin the drawing of it. So at the moment, I fortunately have a solid script to work from when I start each chapter.

If you could live in any fictional world, what would you choose and why?

Definitely Pokemon! I've wanted to ever since I was a kid, it just seems so idyllic and happy, and you have adventures and go exploring so easily.

Do you have any advice for novice artists?

Practice a lot, but don't let drawing become a chore for you. If there's something you love to draw, draw it and don't worry about whether it's self-indulgent or silly. Remember that you have something special to offer the world, and while influences are important, the don't need to take your style in order for it to be good. You're a blend of all your experiences, and so it your art, which is what makes it so cool and interesting!

How would you describe you art style?

Colorful and simple, without much rendering or shading. I've never been very good at either, and I've been a lot happier since I embraced that.

If you could work with another artist or write, who would your dream collaborations be?

Pretty much any of my friends could walk up to me with an idea and I'd be excited about it- I'm mostly inspired by people who are passionate about characters, and all of my friends are!

How did Tea Dragon Society Come to be?

I kind of drew the dragons as a one-off illustration- just something simple and cute for fun. They really took and off and people began asking me about the world so I began fleshing it out and it pretty much kept going.

Film Adventures #1

November 16, 2016

Hey Gang!

Monday's post was a touch on the solemn side, so I thought I would brighten it up a bit, by doing something a little different. I wanted to use the end of the year to create some new content for you guys, but also new types of content. I've always liked Photography, but I don't honestly know if I'm any good at it. So, I thought I would go on little adventures with my Instax Mini that Alex bought me for my birthday and would later blog about it.
I went to see my sister's new place recently, now that it is properly lived in, I helped her move in a couple of months ago. She had all the cousins over, and it was just a great old time! I hadn't had all of my cousins in one place in a really long time, so it was a blast to be all together and to catch up. We had Gold Star Chili, played copious rounds of board games, and a couple of arcade fighters.
This time really reminded me of my childhood, and how long I had been depriving myself of gaming and fun, in exchange for an "adult Life". I want to get better at time management and balancing though, I had so many things planned for the month of October, but work had been so busy, that I wasn't able to do anything extra, I was barely getting out the bare minimum of posts.
I knew it had been a while since I played an arcade fighter, because of my GOD my fingers were killing me. They were all stiff and brittle, and ached something fierce! It was such a weird feeling, because I used to play button-mashers all the time! I even played competitively in the convention circuit and I was pretty good if I did say so myself. After not seeing my cousins in so long, of course I had to take all of the pictures.

Do you use film? Tell me about your adventures on twitter!

A Note to My Readers

November 14, 2016

 Hello My Lovely Gang Members,

This post will be a little different. I have been writing Nerdette At Large in Various forms since before I graduated High School. A lot of you have been around since then, and I thank you for your patience. I have finally narrowed down, exactly what kind of message and community I want to have with Nerdette at Large Readers, and I am coming pretty close to perfecting it, I think.
I wanted to write this letter to you because everyone is having Post-Election feelings, and I also have some to share. I want to say that I am extremely disappointed and scared that Trump is our new Potus. Jokes aside, he has actually won the election and will be in charge of others lives, after January and I am terrified. He has only been elected for about 5 days and already reports of People of Color, being bullied, harassed and attacked have been flooding in. I'm not saying that he is the reason for the "sudden increase" but he has given those who types of people, a voice and a leader. I personally feel, that Donald Trump, doesn't have respect for anyone unless they are a cis white male. This is a major reason why intersectional feminism is so important. Some White women chose to overlook their gender/sex, and voted to "keep their privilege" instead, at the expense of others, who they are supposed to be allies to.

I want my readers, and others who may visit my website to know that Nerdette Minute and Nerdette At Large, will always be a safe haven for all people. All Ethnicities, all sexual Orientations, and all genders. As a Bi, Black Woman, with a safe haven for herself, how could I not offer it to others in need? I know that the next four years, will be a tough road, but we are strong, and we shall climb, and we shall persevere. I am not telling you that everything will be ok, because I don't know that it will. But I am saying, that as long as Nerdette At Large is standing, so am I, and that my arms are open wide to envelope you all into a safe place, of no judgment, and only love. I am always here to listen to anything you wish to tell me.
Feel free to contact me through Twitter, Email, or Instagram. My "Internet door" is always open. I also wanted to give a heartfelt thank you to all of my followers, over the weekend, I passed 500 followers on Twitter, and I honestly don't even know how it happened, but I thank you so much for your support.

Just Remember our gal Pal, Garnet " We are made of Love, and it's Stronger than you".

Until Next Time Gang,
Be safe, Be Nerdy. and Be aware.

Cinema #25: Return of Caped Crusaders Review (Slight Spoilers)

November 9, 2016

Hey Gang!

I'm so excited to be writing this! I've been wanting to see this movie since I saw the original trailer. When I say this movie is almost perfect, please take me at my word and go see it. Or Rent it, or Buy it, its out on DVD now. I'm going to try to skim over the spoilers, but you guys know how these posts work by now. Take me with a grain of salt.
We start out with Bruce and Dick, in the living room. Dick in a leotard, learning ballet. I thought it was a little strange he was uncomfortable in his tights, but Whatevs! They have a variety show, called Gotham Palace, when Hector and the Ho-Daddy's sounding pretty tone deaf, turns out their the fiendish Foursome! I feel like the movie took right off from where the original 66 movie left off. I have to say I was a huge fan of the alliteration they used in the movie; Prince of perverted Puzzles, The Riddler. Dominatrix of Devilry, Catwoman. Can I get that on a button please?
The entire script seemed very tongue in cheek to me. Aunt Harriet looks pretty close to figuring out their secret, she's dropping massive hints. The way she phrased it though... Does she think they're Batman and Robin? or Gay? They are insufferable Do-gooders, even in a hurry, they don't jaywalk. No one's above the law, especially while enforcing it. They paid so much homage to the original movie and the television show. I loved every minute of it. They even brought out all 3 Catwomen!
Since when do they have Batzooka's? The Bat-Analyzer makes an appearance in the batcave. Batman wanted to handle Catwoman personally, the innuendo's are absolutely rampant in this one. Perhaps, not the best movie for children. There was dehydrated goons, and they showed a pretty decent array of the rogues gallery from the television show. Catwoman attempts to take control of Batman, but it doesn't look like it takes effect.
Batman starts to feel the effects of Catwoman's spell later rather than sooner, and loses his damn mind. Batknuckles are involved, The Fiendish Foes find their way into space, and Bruce fires his lifelong friend Alfred, Kicks out Aunt Harriet AND DICK?! He then begins to feel like he can run Gotham better than the Commissioner, and duplicates himself to take over all of Gotham. Not even the chefs were safe. Robin teams up with Catwoman to try to bring Batman back to his normal self, and the craziness reaches an all time high.
I definitely enjoyed this film. There were lots of laughs and innuendo, it paid great homage to its source material and the art wasn't too shabby. HOWEVER, there are quite a few extremely sexist comments made throughout the film that pissed me off. I understand that its the sixties, I even get that it was probably that way in the original series, but with an updated script and writers, I would have really preferred, they left that part out. If you can roll your eyes, and bare it, the movie is pretty great. I had to mention it however, because I wouldn't be me if I didn't.

Have you seen the film? What did you think? Let's Chat on Twitter I'm always up for talking movies.

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~

Comics Roundup #26: Completing Nimona; the Feels after. *slight Spoilers*

November 7, 2016

Hey Gang!

After I fell in love with Lumberjanes a while ago, I decided to go looking for some more of Stevenson's work. I remembered how popular Nimona was on my timeline, my Twitter feed, is full of amazing artists, so the next time I dropped by my local library, there it was sitting on the shelf. Like it was waiting for me, Man, why did it take me so long to read it? Just an FYI, its amazing, and if you haven't read it, go now. Don't even finish my post, just go now.
I never expected it to be so sad. Nimona is a great tale self-acceptance. Whether she was a monster, or a human. She was fully aware of herself. What she was capable of, that one side could overpower the other. I didn't expect the relationship between Blackheart and Goldloin to improve so much towards the end. Even after admitting that the loss of his arm wasn't an accident. They grew closer than ever, even after Goldloin was going to kill Nimona! Although, I guess something can be said for the size of Blackhearts Heart and his abundance of love. I knew Blackheart wasn't a real villain, as soon as he told Nimoa about his old henchman and how popular game night was. Did anyone else notice that World domination was just Monopoly? I do thoroughly enjoy how she was imagining a revolt, so she wouldn't have to pay up.
This story is much darker than lumberjanes but contains that same type of humor, if that makes sense? I feel like every person can find a bit of themselves in this story, and that is what makes it a classic. These pictures are just a few of my absolutely favorite parts of the story. When she morphs into Blackheart and mimics his love for science, makes me giggle so hard. Sometimes I tease Alex about his second love "Science", I wish I could pull this trick on him. I'm sure I'd find it funny. Nimona used her ability just like any person would. If I could be a shapeshifter, I can't guarantee that I would be able to stay on the straight and narrow...No one would know it was me, think of all the possibilities?! Plus you could pop up on people not expecting you as a shark, think of the shock value!!

Have you Read Lumberjanes or Nimona? Lets chat about it on Twitter! I love chatting about Comic books with you guys!

The Problem with "Just a Costume"

November 4, 2016

Hey Gang!

I just gotta hop in real quick and be a little blunt with you guys. You probably aren't guilty of this claim, because I try to surround myself with individuals that are open minded and try not to offend anyone. I will admit that I love dressing up, I absolutely love Halloween AND Cosplaying, but there is a line that should not be crossed.

There are different cultures all over the world, and they all should have the respect that they deserve. With the issues of representation battling it out in the realm of Film and Television, one question that is brought up the most should be, is this respectful? Unfortunately, there are still a lot of people that don't quite get the importance of representation.

One of the biggest reasons Representation is so important, is that there are so many people that are not represented on television. Asians are only 3% of who you see onscreen, Native Americans only 1%, Black men are more likely to be featured on the screen than Black Women, and you can name the amount of oscars won by people of color on your fingers. Lets think about that for a minute. The amount of winners of Oscars for people of color can be counted on your fingers and toes.

Just like Olivia's Speech, you can't win awards for roles that are simply not there. They aren't there because they aren't being written, its not because there aren't suitable actors available to fill the role. If the role is not available, it can NOT be filled. That is the issue with representation. Everyone deserves the right to see themselves on the screen.

The reason, that I'm hashing this out again! Is Disney's Moana animated film. The character design is adorable and many people want to wear them as costumes. Being a Disney film, it is bound to be popular and widely available. The issue with the costumes that are available now, is that they come with a brown skin. The fact that is comes with a skin should aggravate many a people. My issue with the costume is that its deplorable. Just like with White Cosplayers who feel that they have the "right" to wear blackface in order to "look Like" their character. The issue is that the skin color, the culture that comes with their bodies, and their families and their lives. They are not a costume for you to wear. Their culture is not something for you to purchase for 20 dollars, to wear one night, and then to hide in the back of your closet when you are finished having your fun. Their culture is not a trend, and its not for you to use and abuse whenever you feel like it.

It saddens me that I have to make yet another post like this, but with Trump as a "viable" Candidate for President, I only fear that it is going to get much much worse. Just think about it like this, if someone is going to get offended? Then you probably shouldn't wear it. It's pretty damn simple.

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~

Happy belated Halloween!

November 2, 2016

Hey Gang!

I know I'm a couple days late, but since that amazing google game took up all my time Sunday, I figured I'd just wrap up this post and give it to you today, and give you all the Halloween for another week. Who doesn't love more Halloween right? I honestly think Halloween should last all of October. I wasn't able to do all the things I normally do for this amazing holiday, because of my real job, I'm definitely getting better at time management though. This time last season, I was only writing one to two posts a week! But not only have I managed to keep up all three posts this season, but I even managed to implement a new feature! So kudo's to me.
When October was coming closer, I was determined to be the Riddler, but Hot Topic sold out of the jacket before I could go snatch one up. Plus, I had been working a lot so it had slipped my mind, until it literally was the week of Halloween. UGH! So I did some simple costumes for work, a cat, and a pumpkin princess, but of course I waited until the day of, to finally come up with my costume! I was going to be Eevee!
So off I went to the Mall, in hopes of finding a red brown dress that I could use for an eeveeloution body. Because I had quite a few wigs, and I wasn't sure which Eeveeloution I wanted to be of course. I was stuck between Jolteon, Eevee and Umbreon. When I walked into Rue21 and saw the burnt amber skater dress on the clearance rack, I knew it was for me. It was my size (which like, never happens and it was on sale) I took it up to the counter, and Wa-Bam! It was half off the clearance price. So I walked into the mall, bought one dress, for less than ten dollars, and because I couldn't believe my luck, I hightailed it out of there before something else crazy happened.
Last year, I made two pairs of ears out of felt, for the first time, and I had so much fun! So I knew I had to do it again in order to make Eevee's tail and Ears. This was the first time I'd ever made a tail, so it definitely needed some work, but over all it worked. Not only was my costume handmade, but I also had to handstitch it, my sewing machine chose the perfect time to not preform its primary function. I'm even thinking about putting out a D.I.Y. on the ears and tails a little later on. If you guys would be interested in that. Just leave a comment down below.
Originally, I was going to use a white scarf to be like her collar fur, but it was way way too hot for that, so I decided to add some white to the makeup for my costume to bring it all together.
I bought Felt from Michaels, and the costume was born! I used Sable from the Lorac Pro Palette for the line across my nose, and Luminance from an Ulta Prismacolor palette. My eyeliner is Maybelline Felt tip in black. I got my wig from Amazon. I got all dressed up and went to Penn Station got delicious fries, and then we were off to Alex's parents to give out candy to trick or treaters, but there weren't any! All of the families were up on the high street instead of the culdasac where there homes were located, so I only gave candy to like 3 kids. We hightailed it back to our house so I could give out candy there, but I guess the kids had already packed it up. Dunno, when I was younger, I walked around the whole neighborhood twice. Kids now a day, they want everything at their fingertips I guess.

How did you spend your halloween? I hope it was a great one! Lets compare costumes on Twitter!

Until Next Time, Stay Nerdy, ~Spokhette!~
