Honest To Blog: Quvenzhané Wallis

February 25, 2013

I am so angry right now, with people. People in general, who don't see that there is an issue, with calling a 9 year old girl out of her name. She is 9 years old, She is a child, she deserves love, affection and respect. The onion, a "satirical" website, decided to tweet about Quevenzhane, on Oscar night.

"Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c--t, right? #Oscars2013."

How is that funny? How is taking a 9 year old girl. who is experiencing something for the first time, obviously something that she enjoys doing, why would you take that away from her? I scoured the net, looking for people who were just as outraged as I. The comments I found only fueled my fire. A big part of this, is just the fact that people are cruel.

She's a nine year old African American Little Girl, She did an amazing job in a movie, she's in a pretty dress on television, and there isn't anything wrong with her, lets ruin that for her. Honestly, What is your thought process? How in the world do you think its ok, to write that about her?

A big part of the comments are half and half. Half are saying, oh its a total joke, people need to calm down, and the other half, Which it pains me to write, a lot of them are extremely racist. "They used the wrong word? They should have replaced it with  "n-g--r"? ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?
People are so QUICK to say its 2013! Racism doesn't exist anymore. BullSHIT!

I wonder if anyone noticed all the negative attention surrounding the character in Hunger Games? If not please feel free to revert to this article, which couldn't word it any better.http://jezebel.com/5896408/racist-hunger-games-fans-dont-care-how-much-money-the-movie-made

Things need to change, and they need to change now. Who ever wrote the tweet, should apologize, not just delete the tweet. If you put it on the internet, and then delete it, it doesn't go anyway. It doesn't just disappear, you defamed a child, and you should pay.

All the people who don't think its a "big deal" should sit down in a dark room by themselves and think about how horrible a person they are.

To all the people who "defend" the comment, by saying, the girl needs to be taken down a few pegs, she was too confident? She's NINE years old, and Had enough confidence to do what she did, DO NOT TAKE THAT AWAY FROM HER. You go anywhere, and hear people talk about any girl who isn't of "color" and its all about giving girls the confidence they need to succeed,  helping girls with body issues, helping girls know their worth, and NOW because a Girl of COLOR knows her worth, and has SELF-CONFIDENCE, Suddenly its an issue? Suddenly because The Black girl knows that she deserves better than what people have been feeding "us" for YEARS, she needs to be knocked back into her place?

How dare you? How do those people leave with themselves? I'm going to finish this, otherwise, I'll be writing for years, but I have this to say.

Whoever wrote that tweet should be punished. If you don't see this as being a racist issue, not only are you an idiot you are fucking blind. Because not only have you missed, that we are here to stay, but you have missed the fact, that We are strong, and resillient, you did not give us any liberties, and you damn sure don't deserve the power to take them away. We will rise and we will be respected, and if you can't get with that program then get out of the damn way, because we're moving forward, and anything in our way will be promptly removed.

Good Day,

Gabriella E. M. Ballard

Television shows I wish I'd watched earlier...

February 18, 2013

With the purchase of my playstation 3 last year, comes the ability to watch Netflix on my television. With this ability I can chill out in my living room and enjoy Televison shows and movies from the comfort of my couch and I can watch things that aren't even on tv anymore! Its amazing, So I'm going to show you guys 10 tv shows that I wished I had been around for when they were actually on tv.

10.) Hex
A television show about witches that came on BBC America. I caught maybe four episodes, and I've been waiting for it to come on netflix or hulu for the past 3-5 years...

09.) Merlin
A re-imagining of the Classic King Aurther Storry on BBC America. I saw the first season, and I really need to catch up.

08.) Highlander
I watched this all the time when I was little, they used to show re-runs on WGN, before they became TNT.

07.) Danger Mouse
A Super Old Cartoon, about a superhero mouse and his sidekick mole. Its adorable. It's definitely a favorite, you can watch the whole series on Hulu.

06.) Rocky and Bullwinkle
I seriously hope I dont have to explain this one. Its literally a classic. I love the episode where Bullwinkle creates Rocket Fuel out of his grandmother's Cake recipe.

05.) Speed Racer
I grew up with this show. I never got to finish it, but thanks to hulu, I can watch the whole thing. I was notorious, for having a Go Speed Go! Ringtone.

04.) Batman (1966)
There will never be a better live action television show about batman. Ever. Burt Ward, Adam West and Eartha Kitt, you can't possibly go wrong. I absolutely LOVE THIS SHOW! It honestly is one of my favorites, I can sit there and re-watch it over again.

03.) Dark Shadows
Not the revival series, but the original black 'n white series from the sixties. I used to watch episodes on WGN with My uncle Torri and My grandmother, and Snacking on a mountain of her famous Grilled Cheese sandwiches, this show literally defined part of my childhood, it totally broke my heart when Burton ruined it for a movie...

02.) Dick Tracy
I like to watch it all alone in the dark and I knit, and I laugh to myself like a crazy drunkard, which makes me laugh even harder, because I don't drink, and it just makes me super glad that I watch it alone, because if people could see me, they would probably think I'm insane.

01.) Star Trek
Yes, the original. Does anything Else Really need to be said about it? I mean William Shatner, Nichelle Nichols, and Leonard Nimoy, how can you go wrong?

If you guys wanna check these out, try Netflix, and hulu.

Handheld Mistress #16: Games to Play with your miss or Mister

February 14, 2013

In anticipation of Valentine's Day I want to Shoot two particular Stereotypes in the face. Stereotype one: Girls don't play video games. That is not true. I am a girl, and I LOVE video Games, We have entire blogs, networks, and websites dedicated to the fact that gamer girls such as myself exist. Stereotype two: Couples can't play video game together. As long as you have a healthy respect for each other gaming with your significant other can be an awesome experience. Here are a few games that are perfect for the Valentine's Lovey Dovey Date/Get together.

Couples: Catherine for the Ps3. Catherine is essentially a one player unless you play against each other in one of the other mode. The best way to do the actual game is to just switch off. Whoever starts, hands over the controller after the completed level. If you lose more than 8 times, you forfeit your turn, So be careful ( At least that's how it works over here.)

Girls: Pucca Power Up for the DS. Essentially a side scroller you play as either Pucca or her lover, and the goal is to survive each level, because it only brings you guys closer together as a couple.

Girls: Super Princess Peach for the DS. Marioesque, at its finest, but this time Peach is doing the saving.

Couples: Any Arcade Fighter. Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, Tekken, Tekken Tag, Marvel Vs. Capcom, King of fighters, any of those are perfect for couples. Depending on how comfortable a couple you are, you could even make it like strip poker. Have fun!

Girls: Metal Slug 7 for the DS. Also a side scroller, but its amazing! You can choose from four characters, two are girls. You can choose from different guns and there are vehicles and jetpacks and all kinds of cool things. Metal slug has been one of my favorite video games for a really long time.

Couples: Puyo Puyo Fever for the DS. A puzzle game with a large scoop of adorableness, you control an army of little multi-color globs and just like tetris, its a fun game to play with others.

Enjoy that special day, gamers!
P.S. if you guys think of any other games that should be on the list, leave them in the comments.

Nikki + Sarah Live: Premiere

February 1, 2013

I am not one for Mtv. I'm not a big fan of how they run things. I'm just not. But I LOVED the LIVE premiere of Nikki + Sarah. There is just something about the two of them, They're not super fake, their not super models, there just normal girls with biting wit and dripping sarcasm, which is something I enjoy in my friends and people I spend time with. I would really enjoy it if my television shows had the same bite. For once, Mtv, didn't dissappoint me.  It airs regularly on Tuesdays at eleven, with a special guest every night. Premiere night was Kesha.

I'll be back tuesday, will you?
